Please note that an applicant is considered an international student if the applicant meets the following conditions:
- Not a citizen, permanent resident, or have an application on file to become a permanent resident of the United States, and
- Will be attending UTRGV on a visa
Most international students attending UTRGV are on an F-1 student visa, or a J-1 visa.
How To Apply
Applying to UTRGV is simple, and we're here to guide you through every step. Check out the steps below to learn how to apply and take the first steps toward becoming a UTRGV student. We can't wait to have you join us!
- Apply through ApplyTexas.org.
- Submit $50 application fee through the online portal.
- Submit proof of English language proficiency by one of the following companies: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), DUOLINGO English Test, IELTS, or Pearson PTE Academic unless you qualify for an exemption.
- Applicants who attended a foreign institution must send their transcript to get evaluated by one of the following companies: The Evaluation Company, Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA), World Education Services (WES), or International Education Evaluation (IEE) and have the evaluation sent to UTRGV directly from the company.
Language Proficiency
International applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency for admission purposes if not eligible for an exemption. UTRGV accepts the following exams to demonstrate proficiency: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Duolingo English Test, IELTS, and Pearson PTE Academic.

- 6.5 (MyBest Scores also accepted)

Duolingo English Test

Pearson PTE Academic
- 45
For Undergraduate students:
- Applicants who have completed the highest ESL Advanced Level course through the UTRGV Language Institute.

Once the official transcript has been received exemption can be granted for
- Applicants who have recently completed at least 30 credit hours from an accredited university in the United States or one of the countries listed above.
- Applicants who have completed two semesters of freshmen English composition in a U.S. institution and earned a “C” or better.
- Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. Higher Education Institution.
- Applicants who have completed three years of high school in the U.S.
Applicants from the following countries do not need to submit the English language test scores.

Starting a big new chapter in your life begins with one important step. For you, this means sending in your completed application to UTRGV on time. This helps make everything go smoothly when getting into college.

Priority Deadlines
- Summer Sessions: April 1
- Fall Semester: May 1
- Spring Semester: November 1
Applications completed after the priority deadline will still be considered for the application term, but processing times may be longer.
