Admissions Requirements

The decision to transfer to a four-year university requires careful planning. At UTRGV, we will help make your transfer here as seamless as possible by guiding you through the application process, offering you personalized evaluation of credits earned, and helping with academic advisement in your chosen major.

We recognize that, as a transfer student, you have a unique background and educational experience. Below is an outline that addresses different transfer scenarios. If you can’t find the specific answer you’re looking for in our FAQ section, a specialist in transfer admissions is available to assist you with the admissions process.

  • Assured admission is in place for transfer applicants who have earned an associate’s degree from an accredited college.
  • For applicants with more than 24 earned college hours, a minimum GPA of 2.0 is required.
  • For applicants with less than 24 earned college hours, the entering freshman admission requirements must be followed.

International Students

To successfully complete your international application for admission to UTRGV, you’ll need to submit the following:

  • Fill out your UTRGV application online at by submitting a “Freshman, International” application, or a “Transfer, International” application.
  • Pay $50 application fee.
  • Submit a copy of your valid passport.
  • Submit your high school transcript or your official college transcripts for all college courses (a minimum 2.0 GPA is required).
  • Complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). To sign up for TOEFL click here. Note: The minimum scores for the tests are as follow: TOEFL IBT 61, TOEFL PB 500, TOEFL CBT 173, and IELTS 6. Students who submit documentation demonstrating successful completion of ESL Advanced Level course through The UTRGV Language Institute can be waived from TOEFL requirement. The UTRGV school code is 7585.
  • Submit your ACT or SAT scores directly from the testing agency (freshman international applicants only). The UTRGV school code is ACT 6991, SAT 6568.
  • Submit your TSI Assessment scores upon arrival prior to enrollment (freshman international applicants only). Students living close to the area can take the TSI Assessment prior to arrival.
  • Submit your financial documents (original bank statement not older than 90 days as of the first day of classes).
  • Submit the complete and notarized Affidavit of Financial Support form.
    If applicable, submit your Mexican Tuition Waiver form (only for Mexican students)*
  • Provide proof of meningitis vaccination.
  • Once you’re admitted, register for New International Student Orientation

If you fall under these scenarios, you must submit other documents in addition to the standard documents mentioned above.

  • If you’re an entering freshman who attended a high school in a foreign country, you must send your transcript to get evaluated by Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA) or World Education Services (WES). FCSA and WES are the only companies accepted by UTRGV for foreign evaluations.
  • If you’re a transfer student who attended a post-secondary institution in a foreign country, you must send your transcript to get evaluated by Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA) or World Education Services (WES). FCSA and WES are the only companies accepted by UTRGV for foreign evaluations.
  • If you are a student from Mexico, you may qualify for the Mexican Tuition Waiver. This is a student tuition assistance program that allows eligible F-1/J-1 visa students from Mexico with limited resources to pay in-state-tuition. This is a need-based program and not a competitive scholarship.

Once we receive all the required documents and determine your student visa eligibility, the Office of International Undergraduate Admissions will issue an I-20 form. The I-20 form will be mailed to your home address. Express mail service is available at EshipGlobal.
