In Memory of Marian Monta
“Marian Monta was a monumental figure in the Rio Grande Valley theatre world. She was also a friend and mentor to so many, whether it be her students, colleagues, or members of the community.
Arriving at what was then Pan American College in 1971, she quickly established the Theatre area within the Communications Department and was artistic director of the University Theatre since 1974.
In roughly 52 semesters at Pan American University and UTPA, she directed 67 plays and musicals, often sewing costumes herself in the early years. She founded Pan American Summer Stock and at one time had written and received more grants than any other individual on campus. Many people do not know that she also organized and ran the theatre Box Office for years, even as she was teaching, writing, directing and earning accolades in teaching and in theatre.
The list of her professional record could go on and on, but perhaps just as important was her towering generosity. She gave to the theatre department, to students, to all. People were welcome in her home. Even after she retired from teaching in 2007, she continued to teach…for free.
Marian Monta’s legacy of theatre professionalism and generosity to others will not be forgotten.”
