Strategic Priorities and Signature Initiatives

Our strategic plan identifies five focused and two cross-cutting strategic priorities that will enable us to enhance our impact on our students and the Rio Grande Valley community and become the leading Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in the United States. Our focused priorities – Academic Excellence, Student Access & Success, Campus Life, Research & Scholarship, and Health Education & Patient Care – highlight discrete areas of focus that will advance our vision over the next five years and beyond, while our cross-cutting priorities – People and Community Engagement & Integration – highlight critical foundations of the University that will be fundamental in supporting each of our focused priorities.

To realize our strategic priorities, we will pursue several signature initiatives. These initiatives build on our existing and emerging institutional strengths and outline the concrete activities, investments, and commitments that are needed to bring UTRGV to the next stage of its evolution. They are not intended to be exhaustive of all activity that has been or will be undertaken under the purview of a strategic priority. However, we hope this document serves to inspire continual creative thinking among UTRGV community members regarding the future direction of the institution.

Above all, we are committed to serving our student body – the majority of which is Hispanic/Latino and first-generation – and to advancing the prosperity and well-being of the Rio Grande Valley in innovative and meaningful ways. UTRGV was formed nearly a decade ago to uniquely influence our community and our students and their families. Today, it is that solemn responsibility to help create the conditions for individual, social, and cultural transformation that continues to drive us forward.
