HOW TO APPLY
All applications for UTRGV Neurology Residency Program should be made using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). UTRGV neurology programs match via the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, we are following ACGME and NRMP recommendations and timelines, and we will conduct all residency recruitment activities virtually during the 2022-2023 application season.
UTRGV neurology program accepts International Medical Graduates (IMG) but sponsor only J-1 Visas.
Common Applicant Qualifications
- Applicants must be eligible to graduate from an approved American or Canadian medical or osteopathic school or hold permanent certification by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
- Applicants must be eligible for a Texas Physician-in-Training Permit
Please make sure the items below are included with your ERAS application:
- MSPE or Dean's letter from your medical school
- Medical school transcripts
- USMLE or COMLEX transcripts for parts 1 and 2
- ECFMG certificate (IMG only)
- Three letters of recommendation
Applications will be considered, and interviews offered prior to receiving Step 2 scores. However, successful completion of Step 2 (USMLE or COMLEX) is required before ranking.

Neurology Program
UTRGV Neurology Residency Program accepts two candidates each year.
Interview and Matching Process
UTRGV Neurology Residency Program will be following ACGME and NRMP recommendations and timelines, and we will conduct all residency recruitment activities virtually during the 2022-2023 application season.
Competitive Traits:
- USMLE or COMLEX Scores
USMLE Step 2 = 220 or above
USMLE Step 3 = Optional
*Must pass CS.
COMLEX Level 2 = 500 or above
- Be out of medical school no more than 3 years, unless currently in a Research Program within the last 2 years and must operate in a provider status supervised.
Interview and Matching Process
When considering candidates, the division takes a holistic view, including medical school grades, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, research performance, extracurricular activities, and interview.
Interviews are granted on a competitive basis, and applicants will be contacted via email to schedule an interview.
Non-U.S. applicants (IMG)
There are no specific requirements for international medical graduates; invitations are made based on a combination of factors including USMLE scores, recommendation letters, clinical experience, and other factors.
- All applications should be sent through ERAS.
- The program will sponsor J-1 visas (H-1B visas cannot be supported).
- Evidence of clinic experience in the U.S. is preferred.
- IMG candidates must have passed USMLE Step 1 and 2 and hold a permanent ECFMG certificate.
