Valley Baptist Medical Center – Harlingen
Primary Inpatient Training Site

Inpatient rotations are conducted at Valley Baptist Medical Center (VBMC), a 450-bed general hospital and the leading referral center for comprehensive and subspecialty care in South Texas. As a Level II Trauma Center serving Cameron County, VBMC offers state-of-the-art services across a wide range of specialties.
The hospital provides advanced care in medical, cardiovascular, surgical, neurological, obstetric, pediatric, and neonatal medicine. Specialized capabilities include:
- Intensive care units for medical, cardiovascular, surgical, neurological, and neonatal/pediatric patients
- Cardiac catheterization with interventional and electrophysiology services
- A full spectrum of surgical specialties, including cardiovascular, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, plastics, and urology
- Pulmonary and gastrointestinal endoscopy
- Hemodialysis and outpatient multispecialty diabetes care
- Comprehensive wound care and hospice services
VBMC also houses a robust rehabilitation facility offering inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology. Radiology services include CT, MRI, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, interventional radiology, and radiation therapy.

Su Clínica - Primary Ambulatory Training Site

Su Clinica serves as the primary ambulatory care site for the UTRGV Internal Medicine Residency Program. A federally qualified health center (FQHC) and Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), Su Clinica provides comprehensive, longitudinal care to a diverse and primarily underserved population in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
Residents manage continuity clinic patients under the supervision of general internal medicine faculty, gaining valuable experience in outpatient care, chronic disease management, preventive medicine, and community health. The clinic offers a full spectrum of services including internal medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, dental care, behavioral health, podiatry, and pharmacy. These core services are supported by on-site radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy services, as well as nutrition counseling, patient education, WIC, social services, care management, and specialty referral coordination.
With four clinic locations across Cameron and Willacy counties, Su Clinica is a vital part of the region’s healthcare infrastructure and a longstanding partner in medical education. It plays a key role in training medical students and residents, offering frontline exposure to conditions prevalent along the U.S.–Mexico border such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Harlingen Clinical Education Building (HCEBL)
This 94,000 square-foot complex will house a medical library offering a full array of medical journals and texts as well as computer access to online medical resources, including electronic texts and journals, MEDLINE, Micromedex, Ovid Online, and PubMed – even available to you from your personal computer at home. The educational building will also contain an auditorium, multiple classrooms, a video teleconferencing center, and office space for medical faculty. The 94,000-square-foot educational complex serves as a central hub for academic enrichment and resident support. At its core is a state-of-the-art medical library that provides access to an extensive collection of medical journals, textbooks, and reference materials. Residents benefit from 24/7 computer access to premier online medical databases, including MEDLINE, Micromedex, Ovid Online, and PubMed. These resources are also available remotely, allowing residents to continue their learning and research from home or off-site locations.
Beyond the library, the facility includes a large auditorium for grand rounds, lectures, and special events; multiple classrooms designed for interactive didactic sessions and small group learning; and a fully equipped video teleconferencing center that connects residents to virtual conferences and national educational forums. Quiet study rooms are available and can be reserved to provide a focused environment for exam preparation or scholarly work.
