Vision: To be a leader in the education of musicians through the innovation and sustainable approaches to performance, research, and teaching, in a bilingual and multicultural environment.

Mission: The UTRGV School of Music prepares students to succeed as teachers, performers, and scholars by studying diverse musical styles, genres, and traditions; conducting research; and collaborating with each other as well as with local, national, and global communities. Through extensive community engagement, service learning, and exceptional performance opportunities, we expand the understanding of music and enrich the cultural life in our local society and beyond.

*As our new programs such as Mariachi and Popular Music grow they will be offered on both campuses.

*The ensemble experience at UTRGV School of Music-

Students in Choir, Band and Orchestra have the privilege of rehearsing and performing on both Brownsville and Edinburg campuses. These ensembles are made up of students from both campuses and represent the finest music students of the Rio Grande Valley.

Graduate programs-

Graduate academic courses are offered primarily in Edinburg. Graduate applied lessons are offered on both campuses.


Stats & Highlights:

  • 6 Active Student Organizations- The Vaquero Indoor Color Guard, RGV Percussion Club, Phi Boota Roota, Low Brass Club, Kappa Kappa Psi and Flautistas Association.
  • 100% job placement after graduation.
  • Students ensembles perform at conferences nationally and internationally. *Students attend workshops and competitions
  • Our students go on to become K-12 teachers, faculty at community colleges and go on to graduate studies.

Success Stories/”Bragging”:

  • Students have participated in prestigious summer workshops such as Aspen Music Festival and Round Top Festival.
  • Students have gone on to do graduate studies at prestigious music schools such as Indiana University, Rice University and Peabody Conservatory.
  • Saxophone Ensemble performed at the World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia.
  • Andres Vela Won the Texas Music Festival Competition and as a result performed with orchestras in Europe.
  • Clyde Guerra was featured on La Voz, the popular Mexican equivalent of The Voice.
