Services

The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) - University of Texas Rio Grande Valley provides comprehensive instruction and tutoring for the English and Spanish GED test to qualifying migrant and seasonal farmworker and their families to subsequently gain employment or begin postsecondary education or training. The services provided are:

  • Instruction & Tutoring
  • Academic Counseling
  • Post-Secondary Placement
  • STEM and CTE workshops and educational retreat
  • Two Full-time Classroom Instructors and an Evening Spanish GED instructor
  • GED Testing / Individual Educational Plans
  • Educational Materials / Computer-Assisted Instruction
  • Small Classroom Setting / Individualized Tutoring
  • Career, Academic, and Personal Counseling
  • Cultural / Educational Retreats
  • Referrals to Community Services
  • Noon Lunch Provided
  • Monthly Stipends Based on Progress
  • Access to UTRGV Events and Cultural Presentations
  • Bus Tickets & Dorm Housing (available only on need basis)
  • Graduation Ceremony (Cap/Gown/Group Photo/Reception provided)
  • University registration fee reimbursement up to $50 per graduate.

Classes run from August through June. Schedule is 8:20 am to 3:10 pm, Monday through Friday. Spanish GED classes are available depending on demand. New students are accepted on a monthly basis, space permitting. Classes cover all four parts of the GED (Mathematics, Science, Reading, Social Studies, and Reasoning through Language Arts) as well as Human Development and Life Management Skills.
