Counseling
The Counseling Specialist assists students in identifying their personal, interpersonal, academic, and career needs. At regular meetings, the Specialist will discusses with the individual student their academic progress and utilize instructor feedback, their testing record, and personal observations to assist them in evaluating their academic and personal progress.
Counseling Specialist offers a Life Skills Curriculum to support student personal growth by providing information and skills development in the areas of: Preparation for the Job Market (professionalism, appropriate work relationships, work ethics, identifying personal skills, career exploration, job search techniques, resume writing, interviewing). Additionally, the classes offer Self-Management Skills (decision-making, problem-solving, values clarification, goal-setting, time management, stress management, communication, interpersonal skills, conflict management); and Academic Skills and Preparation for Post-Secondary Education/Vocational Training (study habits, test-taking skills, exploration of post-secondary education or vocational-technical training options, financial aid). Also, the counselor administers the mostly recently released version of a work readiness assessment tool. With the assistance of this instrument, students will be better able to identify career interest areas, while the Counselor will continue to prepare students for transition to post-secondary education, employment, or training.
