Club Chess at UTRGV

The Club Chess is a student organization on the UTRGV campus. We are also a Sports Club under UTRGV University Recreation.

We are open to the public and meet at the Education Complex on the Edinburg Campus:

Monday: EIEAB 2.207 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Thursday: EIEAB 2.207 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

You can become a Club Chess member by requesting membership on V-Link through my.utrgv.edu.

Our Club Chess is a student organization and is open to all students enrolled at UTRGV. Faculty and staff are also welcome to join us on Mondays and Thursdays. We are not the UTRGV Chess Team although we work closely with the UTRGV Chess Team to promote chess in our community.

Fundraiser at Chipotle: Wednesday, September 25, 2019

Join us at our restaurant for a fundraiser to support The Club Chess. Just come in to the Chipotle at 7300 N 10th Street Ste 30 in McAllen on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Bring in this flyer (English/ Spanish version), show it on your smartphone or tell the cashier you’re supporting the cause to make sure that 33% of the proceeds will be donated to the Club Chess.

Fundraiser at Golden Chick: Wednesday, October 16, 2019

Join us at our restaurant for a fundraiser to support the Club Chess. On Wednesday, October 16, 2019 from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m at the Golden Chick located on 401 S. Sugar Rd, Edinburg, TX 78539. The event flyer will be available shortly.


Weekly Meetings

We have meetings on Mondays in the Interdisciplinary Engineering & Academics Building (EIEAB) on the Edinburg Campus from 4:00-9:00 in Rm. 2.207. Thursdays are blitz nights in the same room.

Throughout the year, we have fundraising events to raise money for those interested in competition.


HESTEC Scholastic Chess Tournament

Our biggest event during the year is our HESTEC Scholastic Chess Tournament. Stay tuned to V-link for additional events scheduled!



The Club Chess host an annual HESTEC Scholastic Chess Tournament for the following sections K-1, Primary (K-3), Elementary (K-6), Middle School/High School, and OPEN.

The 3rd Annual HESTEC Scholastic Chess Tournament results can be viewed individually or team standings.

The Thanksgiving Bash UTRGV Scholastic Tournament will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at the Edinburg Student Academic Center (ESTAC) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. We look forward to having a great turnout!

Batch Form

Schools and groups must complete the Batch Form to register for the tournament and e-mail it to Jaime.castillo01@utrgv.edu.


Payment

On-site registration and late registrations will be $20.00 with a half point bye in the first round.

If you are interested in making your registration payment through PayPal, please follow the link below to complete a form and payment.

Registration Entry Fee will be $15.00 with a $1.00 processing fee. The registration deadline will be Wednesday, November 20th, 2019.

Make checks payable to Club Chess at UTRGV payments must be accompanied by registration. Refunds will not be given out after 12 p.m. on Friday, November 22nd, 2019. If you are paying with a PO, please call Jaime Castillo at (956) 331-9372 for more information and details.


Scholastic Schedule

  • Round 1 – 9:00 AM
  • Round 2 – 10:15 AM
  • Round 3- 11:30 AM | 30-Minute Lunch Break after Round 3
  • Round 4 - 1:00 PM
  • Round 5 - 2:15 PM
4 Scholastic Sections Swiss-Style Tournament / 5 rounds of Game 25 with 5 second delay
OPEN Section will be 4 rounds Game 60 with 5 second delay
(Sections may be combined due to participation)
