About Us

Welcome to the Department of Human Development and School Services (HD&SS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Our new and improved academic website is designed to be user friendly, so if you have any comments or opinions; please contact us at HDSS@utrgv.edu. Everyone in HD&SS strives to help create a positive, family-orientated, learning environment.

Our faculty works closely with all different types of learners, helping them gather the knowledge and skills that are necessary for working with students in the 21st Century. For all of our students they find the knowledge to measure achievements through education and technology. From our programs in Early Care to Special Education, all of our students leave with the knowledge in order to achieve success.

For those that want to continue their Education we offer Master degrees in Early Childhood and Special Education. We also offer programs leading to certification or licensure - the LSSP (Licensed Specialist in School Psychology). Depending on individual interests, these programs prepare students to become professionals prepared to work in diverse and inclusive environments.

Our programs emphasize child-centered as well culturally sensitive practices, which focus on multiple methods of instruction that would accommodate almost every range of student learner. The HD&SS department faculty has focused on developing our students to be reflective thinkers as well as consumers and producers of research. This has helped our students implement Best Practices that demonstrate leadership within their profession.
