Enriching a Community through the Arts

With the goal of enriching the Rio Grande Valley with culture through the arts, Assistant Vice President for Public Art, Dr. Dahlia Guerra, works with her staff to continuously organize exhibits, showcases and performances for the general public.

On April 7, UTRGV students showcased their artwork in a unique setting at the LFD Furniture Store in McAllen. Patrons viewed various types of artwork that was placed among the furniture, providing students an outstanding opportunity to not only showcase, but sell their art too. In addition, some students were commissioned by event attendees for future art projects.

On April 19, longtime friend and supporter of UTRGV, Artist Kirk Clark, gifted the collection of paintings, the "Visualization Of Music," that he created for the opening of the Performing Arts Complex (PAC). The paintings join the Permanent Clark Collection at the University. A reception at the PAC was held to recognize Clark’s gift along with a beautiful catalogue that he donated to the University. The collection will be on display in the PAC Lobby throughout the summer.

UTRGV art is finding its way into the community every day. After May 27th, the HEB on West Freddy Gonzalez Drive may have a new look that will catch your eye. Two 8-foot by 12½-foot murals created by UTRGV graduate student Ramiro Peña will proudly display two paintings of Edinburg hometown war hero Alfredo "Freddy" Gonzalez. The murals were commissioned by HEB and are currently in production.

In the world of music and dance our UTRGV Mariachi Aztlán and Ballet Folklórico are preparing for their visit to Washington D.C. where they have been invited to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Our music and dance students have been invited to perform in D.C. on several occasions including a performance for the President of the United States. UTRGV’s culturally rich music and dance departments continue to shine on a national platform.

Many concerts are presented almost daily at the Performing Arts Complex in Edinburg and at the TSC Fine Arts Center in Brownsville. If you are interested in purchasing tickets for any of our upcoming events, you can view upcoming schedules and purchase tickets online through our brand new "Vendini" portal at http://patron.utrgv.edu/.

The arts at UTRGV are thriving and we invite the public to enjoy our many events year-round!
