Practicum/Internships

The Counseling Center is committed to contributing to the advancement of the mental health field through the training of new professionals. Our goal is to assist trainees to grow both personally and professionally. We offer opportunities for Masters level internships/practicums and Post-doctoral residencies each semester. The Counseling Center is meant to be an “advanced” practicum in mental health counseling for students who are available to intern for at least 30 hours a week, during the hours of 8 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. Applicants are encouraged to submit their materials well in advance of their proposed training semester.

In order to apply please complete our online application linked below. Also send the documents listed below to counseling@utrgv.edu

  • Counseling Center Training Application
  • Cover letter
  • Résumé or curriculum vita
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Copies of any licensures/certifications attained

Please note a criminal background check is required for this internship. Once you complete an interview, you will be given a background check form to be completed.

Interns/practicum students volunteering at the Counseling Center often work with a range of client issues and diagnoses. Our clients also present a range of ages, religions, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. The role and philosophy of our department is comparable to that of a community mental health center. Psychotherapy services are available to currently enrolled students. Faculty and staff are referred to the Employee Assistance Program through Human Resources. Referrals to community agencies may also be provided to those who do not qualify for our services. Services offered also include crisis intervention, outreach services, and psychoeducational programs.
