Dr. Alcione Ostorga

Dr. Alcione Negrão Ostorga is a professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in the Bilingual and Literacy Department, at the College of Education and P-16 Integration. She has been a member of the Mentoring Outreach and Membership Committee of the Women Faculty Network and was chair of this committee for 2 consecutive years. Currently she is working on a survey to assesses the mentoring needs of faculty in different categories: tenure/tenure track, clinical/ professor in practice, and lecturers. She learned about best practices for mentoring from the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity and has shared her knowledge through presentations to faculty sponsored by the WFN and the university’s Office of Faculty Success and Diversity.

Dr. Robert Gilkerson

Robert Gilkerson is an associate professor in the Departments of Biology and Clinical Laboratory Sciences/HABS at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. A cell and molecular biologist, his research explores the structure/function balance of the mitochondrial network and its contributions to cellular homeostasis and metabolism. He received his Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Roderick Capaldi at the Institute of Molecular Biology, University of Oregon, followed by postdoctoral training with Dr. Eric Schon in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University Medical Center. As a scientist and educator, he is committed to inquiry-based research and increasing access for UTRGV students to careers in the life and health sciences.

Dr. Johnelle Sparks

Dr. Johnelle Sparks is Professor of Demography and Associate Dean for Faculty Success and Administration in the College for Health, Community and Policy at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has been with the department since fall 2006 and has worked extensively mentoring doctoral students completing the applied demography doctoral program. She is also a Master Facilitator of the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research curriculum through the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her main areas of research include: 1) premature aging, allostatic load, and mortality; 2) spatial inequality and disparities in health and mortality; and 3) inequalities related to segregation, poverty, sexual orientation, and education. Methodologically, Dr. Sparks has a primary focus on research methods and complex survey data. Part of this work is highlighted by ongoing Texas Research Data Center (TXRDC) projects at Texas A&M University that require federal level clearance to access restricted CDC data. She has taught research methods and health disparities for over fifteen years; additionally, she has developed survey instruments and participated in primary data collection efforts in San Antonio, TX on food insecurity and WIC participation and childhood health. She also works with colleagues at UT Health San Antonio on the SAVES project (San Antonio Vision and Eye Study) which is an epidemiologic examination of eye health, cognitive function, and overall well-being in San Antonio.

Dr. Cristina Villalobos

Dr. Cristina Villalobos holds the Myles and Sylvia Aaronson endowed professorship in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) and is Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives and Institutional Effectiveness in the College of Sciences at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.  Moreover, Dr. Villalobos is the Founding Director of the Center of Excellence in STEM Education, which focuses on strengthening STEM academic programs and providing resources for the academic and professional development of faculty and students, especially increasing the numbers of underrepresented students attaining STEM graduate degrees.  Dr. Villalobos served as Interim Director of SMSS from 2015-2017 transitioning the school through the first two years of UTRGV. She has over 30 publications in optimization, optimal control, and STEM education.  Her recognitions at the national level for mentoring and STEM leadership can be summarized with the 2019 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring awarded by the White House.  Dr. Villalobos was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, is a first-generation college graduate, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Texas-Austin and her Ph.D. in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Rice University in 2000.
