Community Engagement
The College of Liberal Arts is actively involved in community engagement as a means to connect UTRGV to the most valuable assets our region has to offer, the people of the Rio Grande Valley.
Two excellent ways that we do this are through our Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Program and the Rio Grande Valley Civil War Trail.
The CHAPS Program was established in 2009 to create archaeologically and historically literate citizens who are aware of their local cultural and natural history and its importance to the future of the Rio Grande Valley. The program helps local school districts develop interdisciplinary K-12 curricula to prepare students for future enrollment in STEM subjects and teaches students the importance of stewardship to include site preservation, ethics, and laws that affect our non-renewable local resources.
