TSI FAQs

What is TSI Status?

The Texas State Legislature mandated that students entering institutions of higher education be assessed for college readiness in the areas of English Language Arts Reading and Math. Students can either meet an exemption or take the TSIA2 exam to comply with the assessment of their college readiness.

A complete list of exemptions can be found here. If you meet an exemption, make sure to give the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at UTRGV the applicable documents to reflect the exemption on your TSI status. If you have dual credit courses, contact the college/university and request that your official college transcript be sent to UTRGV right away. The transcript may contain information that could help update your status. Note: ACT/SAT scores must be received directly from the testing company, and it can take a few weeks for scores to be received by UTRGV.

If your high school does not offer TSIA2 testing on site, you can take the TSIA2 exam at our testing center.

    • less than 945 on the multiple-choice section, a diagnostic level of 5 or 6, and an essay score of 5-8

Exams taken before 1/11/2021:

Note: If you are uploading or emailing your scores, include all the pages from your score report. Do not crop the pages. Include your UTRGV student ID number on the document for faster processing.

Send scores as soon as they become available. This applies to TSI, ACT and SAT scores. Don't delay!

Yes, you can continue retaking the TSIA2 exam until you achieve a passing score. If you decide not to retest, you must participate in the Jumpstart program starting Summer 2 2025.

Yes, we need to know that you have taken the TSIA2 exam at least once (if you don't meet an exemption) even if you haven't passed it yet.

Yes, you can attend New Student Orientation but you need to be prepared to start classes during Summer 2 2025 as part of the Jumpstart program, if required.

Yes, you can attend New Student Orientation but it is recommended that you sign up for June orientations. We need to have your final high school transcript showing the grades for your TSI class to determine if you need to be part of the Jumpstart program in Summer 2 2025. If you don't want to wait until June to attend orientation, you may take the TSIA2 exam and submit your scores to attend an earlier orientation date. ***UTRGV does not accept College Bridge***

To check if your scores have been processed, log in to my.utrgv.edu and click on the ASSIST application. Once you are in ASSIST, go to your Student Profile and click on the Prior Education and Testing option on the menu. Processed test scores will be displayed under the Testing section. Please allow at least 5-10 business days after the test scores have been submitted for processing.
