Expanding College Access Through Hybrid Advising
The Advise TX Hybrid College Advising Corps at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley places recent college graduates from Texas universities at partner high schools where they serve as full-time, near-peer hybrid college advisers.
The program with support from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and College Advising Corps uses a hybrid advising model that combines in-person and virtual advising to provide services that help high school students pursue postsecondary education opportunities. The Advise TX Hybrid CAC at UTRGV leverages the unique skills, knowledge, and experiences of its hybrid advisers to offer college admissions and financial aid advising to high school students and their families. Hybrid advisers conduct one-on-one and group sessions that assist students explore and plan their post-secondary options using a “match and fit” model to identify colleges and universities that will serve them well, complete their admission and financial aid applications, and successfully enroll at the college they choose after graduating high school.
The program aims to increase the number of students enrolling in and completing higher education with a particular focus on students who are first-generation college students, from working class families or belong to underrepresented groups.
