Military Tuition Assistance

Federal Military Tuition Assistance

Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.  The Department of Defense (DoD) limits TA to $250 per semester credit hour and $4,500 per year.  Each branch of the military has its own tuition assistance policy.  DoD pays TA directly to the university.

Service-specific TA information is available at the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force/Space Force, and Coast Guard education portals.

Using TA at UTRGV

  1. Service members should speak with their Educational Services Officer (ESO) at their unit/command prior to applying to or enrolling at UTRGV. Each service has unique requirements that must be met and/or completed prior to or as part of the TA application process.  After obtaining the proper approval, visit the TA portal for your respective branch and create an account.

Register for classes via ASSIST at https://my.utrgv.edu/home.  You will need to have a UTRGV billing statement and class schedule in digital form to upload onto your corresponding TA portal if/when prompted.  Once the request is approved, you will receive a TA authorization statement.

  2. Email a copy of your approved Contract Order, SF182, TA Authorization form, or other type of payment information to Student Accounting Services at tuitionassistance@utrgv.edu.  Include your full name, UTRGV Student ID Number, and contact phone number.  Please ensure your form is signed and dated, if required.  Student Accounting Services will apply TA to the UTRGV billing account after the 20th class day.

Sponsorship documents and forms will be applied to the student account as a conditional credit. Conditional credits do not signify that a payment from the sponsoring entity (TA) was received by the UTRGV. Conditional credits are subject to change based on payments received.

The sponsoring government/military entity determines what will and will not be paid – regardless of what has been invoiced. They have the final authority on tuition and fee-related payments, which could change the conditional credits applied to the account.

  3. Student Accounting Services will process your TA authorization in accordance with established procedures.

Unearned TA Policy

Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded. To comply with Department of Defense policy, UTRGV will return any unearned TA funds on a prorated basis through at least the 60% portion of the period for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending.

Return of unearned TA funds may result in students owing a debt to UTRGV. Students are advised to contact tuitionassistance@utrgv.edu before dropping any class that is supported by federal Tuition Assistance.
