Transient Students
Continue your studies during your summer break at UTRGV by enrolling as a Transient student. You are considered a Transient student if you are attending another institution of higher education but wish to enroll in courses during Summer at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on a temporary basis as non-degree seeker with the intent of returning to your home institution.
Documents Required to Complete Application:
- Visiting Student Application available at https://applytexas.org/. For international applicants, a $50 non-refundable application fee will apply.
- Official college transcript from your home institution. To meet admission requirements, students must have a 2.0 GPA and be in good standing at their home institution.
- If you are an international applicant, you must complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), DUOLINGO English Test, IELTS, or Pearson's PTE Academic unless you qualify for an exemption.
Note: The minimum scores for the tests are as follows: TOEFL 61 (IBT, IBT Home or IBT Paper edition, IBT MyBest Scores), TOEFL Essentials 6.5 (Essentials, MyBest Scores), DUOLINGO 95, IELTS 6, and Pearson's PTE Academic 45. Students who submit documentation demonstrating successful completion of the highest ESL Advanced Level course through The UTRGV Language Institute can be waived from TOEFL requirement.
Documents Needed After Admission:
- Medical records documenting Meningitis Vaccination within 5 years of the start of the application term or exemption. Please check the UTRGV undergraduate catalog for additional information.
Transfer coursework is only evaluated for degree-seeking students. Check to see if the course you are interested in taking requires pre-requisites by reviewing the Class Schedule. If so, contact the appropriate academic department to get permission to enroll.
Meet with an academic advisor at your home institution to ensure the course you are interested in taking will transfer and is needed for your degree plan.
Transient students who wish to remain enrolled at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley must reapply for admission as a Transfer student through https://applytexas.org/ and meet all the admission requirements and criteria for Transfer students.
Transient Enrollment by an F-1 student:
In addition to the requirements mentioned above, F-1 students must contact our International Admissions and Student Services office.

Please check with your home institution regarding financial aid eligibility. Transient students are not eligible for Financial Aid at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Transient students are allowed to register at any time after they have been admitted, once registration for the term is available. If you are unable to register for a course, please contact U Central for assistance.
Tuition and fees must be paid by the semester deadline published in the Academic Calendar found on the https://my.utrgv.edu/home under Resources.
