Transient Students

Join us on a learning adventure this summer at UTRGV by becoming a Transient student.

Whether you're currently enrolled at another institution of higher education, you can still take summer courses at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. As a Transient student, you can temporarily enroll as a non-degree seeker to return to your home institution.

Apply To UTRGV

  • Submit a Visiting Student application through ApplyTexas.org.  
  • Submit the official college transcript from your current or last institution attended:  
    • U.S. institution: Submit the official college transcript directly from the college/university to UTRGV. 
    • Foreign institution: Send your transcript to get evaluated by The Evaluation Company (formerly SPANTRAN), Foreign Credentials Service of America (FCSA), World Education Services (WES), or International Education Evaluation (IEE) and have the evaluation sent to UTRGV. 
Additional Items for International Applicants:
  • Submit $50 application fee through the online portal.  
  • Submit proof of English language proficiency by one of the following companies: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), DUOLINGO English Test, IELTS, or Pearson PTE Academic unless you qualify for an exemption.

Applicants must be in good standing at their previous institution and have a minimum GPA of 2.0 to be considered for admission at UTRGV.

Priority Deadlines

  • Summer Session 1: April 1 
  • Summer Session 2: May 1

Applications completed after the priority deadline will still be considered for the application term, but processing times may be longer

I'm Admitted, What's Next?

Follow these steps to ensure a great start to UTRGV!

Go to myaccount.utrgv.edu to activate your account. Check ASSIST and your UTRGV email often – all official UTRGV messages go to your UTRGV email account.

If you are below 22 years of age, submit proof of bacterial meningitis vaccination or exemption. The vaccine must be given within the 5 years prior to the start of the term you applied for. The document must contain your full name, date of birth, vaccine name, date vaccine was given, and signature/stamp from physician/facility that administered the vaccine. The document can be submitted online through Document Central or emailed to application@utrgv.edu. Affidavits must be submitted in person or by mail.

Transient students will be granted a TSI waiver for Summer enrollment. No TSI scores are needed.

Transfer coursework is not evaluated for Transient students. If the class you wish to enroll in has prerequisite restrictions, contact the appropriate academic department to get permission to enroll in the class. Check out this guide if you experience other issues with registration.

You may be eligible for Financial Aid only at your home institution. Check with the Financial Aid office at your campus to see if you qualify for any aid while at UTRGV.

A new application will be required if you decide to enroll as a Transient student the following year. If you decide to attend UTRGV as a degree-seeking student, you must apply as a Transfer student and submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended to the office of Undergraduate Admissions before classes start. Keep in mind our admission criteria for Transfer and Transient students is different.

Clery Act

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes information on safety and security policies, including crime and fire statistics for the previous three years.

The report is available on the University Police website at:  https://utrgv.link/csr2024.  A hard copy of the report is available at the University Police Departments located on 501 N. Sugar Rd. (Edinburg), 2671 FJRM Ave. (Brownsville), 2102 Treasure Hills Blvd. (Harlingen), or 1937 East Bustamante Street (Laredo), also by contacting University Police at 956-882-7777.
