David Carren, MFA

Biography

David Bennett Carren has directed, written or produced more than 200 films and television shows, including Star Trek: The Next Generation and Stargate, SG1.

His recognition as a screenwriter includes a First Place in the New York Television and Film Festival, a Grand Prize from the StoryPro Awards, a Writer’s Guild Award Nomination, and Platinum, Gold and Bronze Remi Awards. As a director, he earned a Silver Palm at the Mexico Film Festival for his feature film, The Red Queen.

Medallion Books published David’s first novel, No Power on Earth, Stonelock Pictures optioned his second novel, I've Killed Mother, and his short story If She Dies was published in Twisted Tales before David adapted it as an episode of The New Twilight Zone. His textbook on screenwriting, Next Level Screenwriting, which he co-wrote with David Landau, is available through Focal Press.

His full-length play, Hunter’s Moon, was a semi-finalist in the 2014 Eugene O'Neil National Playwright's Conference and his one act play, The End of Infinity, was a finalist in the Scribbler Theatre Play Competition.

David earned his Bachelor in Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin and his Master in Fine Arts at Spalding University. He is a full Professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley where he teaches screenwriting and film history.

Biography

Richard Edmonson joined the faculty full-time in 2011. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Performance from West Texas A&M University and his Master of Arts in Theatre from the University of Texas-Pan American. Locally, Richard has previously directed Evita, Under a Starr Sky, Real Women Have Curves, Christmas Cantata, Lend Me a Tenor, and To Kill a Mockingbird. He also enjoys performing and was most recently seen as Herr Schultz in Cabaret (All Star Theatre) and as Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd (UTPA).

Biography

Peter Mikolasky received an MFA in acting/directing from Texas Tech and is currently working on a second masters in communication. A member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor fraternity, Trey’s been teaching theatre and communication for 6 years. Mikolasky is a certified actor-combatant with a SAFD. A few of the plays he has directed include Elephant Man, A Few Good Men, All in the Timing, and Driving Miss Daisy, Brighton Beach Memoirs.

Ferenc Moldovanyi is an Internationally acclaimed independent filmmaker with over 25 years of professional experience as a film director-producer, whose works have been widely covered by international press (Variety, Screen, Realscreen, Le Monde, Liberation, BZ, Tagesspiegel, FAZ, etc.)  He holds a Doctorate (DLA) in Film and Video and MFA in Film and Television Directing from the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Budapest (Hungary). His films have achieved recognition worldwide, featured at 160 festivals in 50 countries such as Berlin, Locarno, Montreal, Karlovy Vary, Denver, Toronto, Houston, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Sydney, Vancouver, London, Tel Aviv, etc.  Winner of over 40 prestigious film awards such as Special Jury Award at Mannheim Film Festival, Maysles Brothers Awards at Denver Film Fest, Gold Special Jury Award at World Fest Houston and the Grand Prize of City Turin for Best Feature Film, etc.

Jennifer Saxton, MFA

Biography

Jennifer Saxton is an Associate Professor in theater/TV/film and the University Productions faculty costume designer. She teaches costume design, construction, stage makeup, script analysis and occasionally theater history. She also supervises internships for theater/tv/film majors.

She holds a BFA from Tarleton State University and an MFA from Minnesota State University Mankato. She has worked as a costume designer, shop manager and cutter/draper in theaters in the Northeast, Midwest and Texas, most recently working for four summers with the Chautauqua Theatre Company as their cutter/draper/assistant costume shop manager.

Recent favorite designs include the scenic and costume design of She Stoops to Conquer, the costume design of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde Play, and She Kills Monsters, and the set design A Year with Frog and Toad. Brian Warren, Ed.D.

Biography

Dr. Brian Warren is an Associate Professor in the Theatre Department after joining the faculty in 2002.  His doctorate in theatre education is from the University of Houston.  For the Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) program, Warren has written and directed 18 plays for that program, most recently Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.  Warren has directed over 20 Main Stage and Studio productions at UTPA/UTRGV. Favorites include In the Heights, Bonnie and Clyde, Sweeney Todd, King Lear, Of Mice and Men, Evil Dead: the Musical, and Richard III.  Warren helped establish Powerful Actors Creating Theatre (PACT) youth theatre summer camp which is going on 10 seasons. In addition to directing and writing, Warren most recently performed in Legally Blonde and Chemical Imbalance.  Warren is a member of the American Alliance for Theatre and Education.

Eric Wiley, Ph.D.

Biography

Eric Wiley joined the faculty in 1999 after taking a Ph.D. in Theatre from Louisiana State University and an M.F.A in playwriting from UT Austin. At UTPA he has directed The Menaechmi, She Stoops Conquer, Tempest, Check Out Chekhov, Betrayal, A Glass of Water, A Flea in her Ear, Proof, Oedipus the King, Late Bloomers, The house of Bernarda Alba, Hedda Gabler, and The Red and the Blue.
