UTRGV SOM Granted Provisional Accreditation
June 21, 2021
Dear UTRGV Community,
I am pleased to share with you great news regarding our School of Medicine’s continued efforts toward obtaining full accreditation.
The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the national accrediting authority for the U.S. and Canada, informed us today (June 21) that the UTRGV School of Medicine (SOM) has been granted provisional accreditation status.
Provisional accreditation signifies an important step for the SOM and positions us on a projected timeline to achieve full LCME accreditation within the next two years.
Preparations for full LCME accreditation have already begun. The full accreditation process includes an independent student analysis, an institutional self-study, and culminates with a three-day survey visit by a team of medical educators and practitioners appointed by the LCME Secretariat.
Please join me in thanking our outgoing SOM dean Dr. John Krouse for his leadership and for everyone involved for achieving this milestone in the accreditation process. We look forward to continuing this success when our new dean, Dr. Michael Hocker, joins us later this month.

Sincerely,
Guy Bailey
