RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – MAY 21, 2020 – Who would have thought UTRGV’s parking lots would be a great place to study and do research? Free Wi-Fi, y’all!

As classes remain online through summer semesters and the UTRGV community is studying and working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, the UTRGV Information Technology department says Wi-Fi continues to be available throughout all UTRGV campuses, including from the parking lots, so everyone can maintain safe distances from others.

  • Students can take advantage of the Wi-Fi access available in Edinburg parking lots E3, E6, E9, E12, E14 and E16. See Edinburg map.
  • In Brownsville, Wi-Fi access can be found in Parking Lot B1 surrounding the Interdisciplinary Academic Building. See Brownsville map.

As COVID-19 continues to affect lives around the globe, many students are adjusting to the online environment, and some may not have Wi-Fi available at home.

“Students benefit from our parking lot Wi-Fi because if they need a fast internet connection, they can park and sit in their vehicle and connect their device to the Eduroam network,” said Isai Ramirez, associate CIO and director of ERP programs. “And they can do this while keeping a safe distance from others, as per the social distancing guidelines.”

Because student success is the priority, IT has developed a webpage where students can find resources, tips and information for working remotely and learning online.

IT also created a resources webpage for staff and faculty working and teaching remotely.

In addition, some computer labs are also open to students at the following locations:

  • Edinburg – EACSB 2.106
  • Brownsville – BMAIN 1.508

Virtual labs are also available 24/7 at https://virtuallab.utrgv.edu.

As changes continue to be needed during the pandemic, the UTRGV IT department will continue to update the Resources for Working Remotely webpages:

ABOUT UTRGV

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.
