Mariachi Festival

Hello Mariachi Friends!

Save the Date for the FESTIBA 2019 Mariachi Festival!

We are excited to present our guest artists and clinicians for FESTIBA 2019, which will take place on March 1st and 2nd, 2019 at the UTRGV Performing Arts Complex. Our special guests this year include Maestro José Hernández, founder and director of Mariachi Sol de México and Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles. José is recognized internationally as an innovative force behind mariachi music, both musically as well as in mariachi education. With Mariachi Sol de México, José Hernández tours and performs throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America, and he has made a huge impact throughout the years on our mariachi programs in the Rio Grande Valley.

Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles will be teaching and performing at FESTIBA 2019. As the first all female mariachi in the United States, Mariachi Reyna transformed the history of women in mariachi music from solo singers to a full complement of musical performers.  Also coming to FESTIBA 2019 are Mexican operatic baritone, Octavio Moreno, Jonathan Clark, foremost mariachi historian, Maestro Jorge Ivan Velasco, world renowned folk harpist, Dr. Diana Seitz, renowned violinist and pedagogue, and Eddy Lopez, mariachi music arranger.

Future engagements include Laurentino in “Cruzar la cara de la luna” with El Paso Opera, Xihuital in “El pasado nunca se termina” with Fort Worth Opera, and Marcello in “La Boheme” with Arizona opera.

Members of Mariachi Aztlán will also be clinicians at the workshop.

Also joining us this year at the FESTIBA workshop is Juan Rivera (nephew of Antonio Maciel), multi-instrumentalist, two-time GRAMMY award nominee, and former member of the Sones de Mexico Ensemble. Juan Rivera specializes in the huapango huasteco.  He is a radio host and producer of "La Hora del Son," a one-hour weekly radio broadcast in Spanish that promotes a greater appreciation of Mexico's folk and traditional music.  He is currently a music educator in Chicago who creates cultural and educational programs for children in Mexican music and dance.
