SafeConnect - Network Access Control (NAC)

What is SafeConnect and why is it being used?

SafeConnect is a network access control (NAC) system that helps ensure all devices connecting to the UTRGV network meet minimum security standards. SafeConnect requires users to authenticate their accounts by entering a username and password, then installing a security Policy Key Agent on their device before allowing them access to the University's network. Internet access is restricted without this authentication.

How do I install the Policy Key Agent?

SafeConnect will automatically prompt you to download and install the agent when you attempt to connect to an Internet using your device. When prompted by the installer, follow the instructions to the installation process. The Policy Key Agent will be installed as an application service and will automatically start each time you turn on your device and connect through SafeConnect. The Policy Key Agent is already installed on UTRGV-managed devices.

Do I have to use the SafeConnect Policy Key Agent?

Yes. All Microsoft Windows and Macintosh computers are required to install the Policy Key Agent in order to access the UTRGV network. This requirement helps to ensure a safe operational environment for network users. Currently, Linux and FreeBSD machines are not required to install the SafeConnect Policy Key. However, authentication is still required.

What does the SafeConnect Policy Key Agent actively do on my system?

The SafeConnect Policy Key Agent continuously verifies that your system meets the minimum security standards currently in place on the UTRGV network.

What about my privacy?

Your privacy is of the utmost importance to us at UTRGV. The SafeConnect Policy Agent scans only for the requirements needed on your device to meet the minimum UTRGV network security standards. Your UTRGV authentication credentials (username and password), MAC address, client IP, and related information is collected only to ensure proper system function and client protection. Personal user data is not collected or stored by the SafeConnect system.

If I am quarantined, can I access remote sites to update my system?

Yes. If you are quarantined by SafeConnect, you will still be allowed to access certain sites, such as Microsoft and other authorized anti-virus websites, to help bring your system into compliance. If you have any questions about your system being quarantined, please contact the IT Service Desk at (956) 665-2020.

How often will I be prompted to log in to UTRGV SafeConnect?

Under normal circumstances, once you log in and authenticate, you will not be prompted to enter your credentials again. You will also not be prompted to reinstall the SafeConnect Policy Key Agent again, unless it was removed since your last network connection. Currently, SafeConnect does not offer an agent for Linux. Linux users must log in through the web portal page to connect to the network.

What are the benefits of using SafeConnect in the UTRGV network environment?

SafeConnect is part of UTRGV's effort to help you keep your work and study environments free of operational issues that could compromise the network or harm your device. Some of the benefits of using SafeConnect are: 1.) Devices protected by SafeConnect generally perform much better and require much less downtime due to damage caused by malicious software or network activity, 2.) The SafeConnect Policy Key Agent helps ensure the user has the fastest possible browsing experience while connected to UTRGV's network, 3.) SafeConnect ensures that the unsolicited communications do not flood the University's Internet connection, which could result in slower connections for or the restriction of certain applications, resulting in a much slower and degraded connection for users.

Will my computer still work when I connect to my home or other network?

Yes. The SafeConnect Policy Key Agent is active only when your device is connected to the UTRGV network. When you connect your device to any other network, the agent is dormant.

Can I connect my Xbox, PlayStation, or other non-computer equipment to the UTRGV network from University dorms/housing?

Yes. SafeConnect will recognize game consoles and other non-computer devices automatically and allow them to connect to the network without authentication. If you are using the University's wired network, plug in the Ethernet cable. The network will recognize your device and allow it to connect to the Internet. If you have any problems connecting your non-PC device to the network, please contact the IT Service Desk at (956) 665-2020.
