Program Overview - Accolades

Special Education students need teachers and advocates with the unique expertise to guide them to a successful future. If your passion matches your ambition, you can earn your M.Ed. in Special Education online with UTRGV in as few as ten months. An initial teaching certificate is not required to enter this program. If you are certified teacher, the TEACH Grant-eligible degree program will prepare you for additional special education certification credentials.


TEACH Grant Program

The TEACH Grant Program is specifically geared towards people studying to obtain certain types of teaching degrees. This federal from the Department of Education is designed to help school fill their shortage of teacher in high-need fields. Before applying for this grant, you will need to verify that the subject you are wishing to teach in is classified as a high-need.

A high-need field is considered an area of teaching that the federal or state government has identified as possessing a significant shortage of teachers. These fields can change from time to time, but they often include subjects such as math, science, special education and bilingual education.

Essentially the grant has a potential to later be converted to a loan in the event you are unable to meet the demands that are in place. The grant will provide up to $4,000 of your tuition costs every year for both undergraduate and graduate programs. For any students that take summer courses will be eligible up to $2,000 more per year.

The Master of Education in Special Education - Online will help develop an inclusive teaching approach the will help remove barriers so students can reach their full learning potential. This online program is flexible, affordable program that will give you the tools needed to increase your knowledge. This program will also help you gain a more individualized creative experience to help tailor to each individual student. 


Program Information

How The Program Works:

This fully online program is designed to be on an accelerated pace. You will complete the program within 10 months, as long as you take the required course as they come up. The program design is broken down into two modules per semester; consisting of two modules per module, taking both courses will ensure you will graduate within the 10-month period.

Time to degree:

The program will take about 10 months to full completion. If you so decide to only take one class it will take you linger to complete the program. Please remember that taking one course per module will take you out of sequence. You will have to wait until the missing course is back in full cycle.

Total Credit Hours:

30 credited hours to completion

Special Education Teachers:

  • Early/Pre-K to 12
  • ESE Teacher for high-incidence disabilities: Resource and/or Inclusion
  • ESE Teacher for low-incidence disabilities: Sensory, Development, and/or Multiple/Severe Disabilities
  • Teacher/Specialist: Emotional or Behavioral Disorders
  • Teacher/Specialist: Autism Spectrum Disorders

ESE Support Services:

  • Speech-Language Pathologist
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Physical Therapist
  • School Counselor
  • Assistant Technology Practitioner/Specialist
  • Teacher Assistant

Admission Requirements

  • Submit transcripts from all colleges/universities

  • GPA 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Official TOEFL or IELTS scores
