Dr. Kristen M. Clancy, PharmD and recent graduate of MS Health Sciences put skills she learned in the Professional Proposal Writing course (HSCI 7302) to work writing grants. Barely a year after she graduated from MS Health Science, one of Dr. Clancy’s recent submissions to CDC was awarded $1.25 million over 10 years for the Houston Recovery Initiative. Congratulations! |
Congratulations to Ms. Stephanie Bender, a graduate of MS Health Sciences with a concentration in Healthcare Informatics. Stephanie was recently accepted to the inaugural class of UTRGV’s School of Podiatric Medicine. |
Mr. Basil Nduma, a student in the MS Health Sciences, Healthcare Informatics concentration, has been accepted to an Internal Medicine residency program at Merit Health Wesley Hospital in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Mr. Nduma went to medical school at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria and worked as a medical officer (equivalent to a US Physician Assistant) before coming to the US and enrolling in the MS Health Science program at UTRGV. Mr. Nduma was one of around 4000 foreign-trained physicians selected for US residency this year out of about 12,000 applicants. His application for medical license in Mississippi has been approved and he is now starting on a new phase in his professional life. | |

Family of three earning graduate degrees at UTRGV
Graduating from UTRGV became a major family affair for a North Texas mother, Norma Ochoa Urban-Palomarez (left), daughter, Elvia Palomarez (center), and father, Mario Palomarez (right). The family all enrolled in UTRGV accelerated online programs to earn their master’s degrees. Norma finished earning a Master of Education in Educational Technology in August 2020 and currently is working on a doctorate. Elvia and Mario both enrolled in the Master of Science in Health Sciences with a concentration in Health Care Administration Online Program. Norma and Elvia will be graduating via the virtual commencement on Saturday, Dec. 12. Mario is on his way to graduating in May 2021. (UTRGV Photo)

Taylor Martinez is a native to the Rio Grande Valley and received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from UTRGV and has just completed her Master of Science with a concentration in Nutrition with a 4.0 GPA. During her masters, she served as a founding board member and Vice-President of the Accelerated Online Program Graduate Student Association and provided a network of communication and opportunities for online graduate students. She recently provided a nutrition and resiliency presentation for the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston and was presented on June 15, 2021 during an online seminar. | |
Taylor plans on continuing her education in the medical field and intends to carry on a legacy that the university has instilled in her path |
Cecil James Buguis, an international student, graduated Spring 2021 with his second master's degree, Master of Science in Health Sciences - Clinical Laboratory Sciences concentration with a GPA of 4.0. During the program, he served as the International Student's Representative of the newly established Accelerated Online Programs - Graduate Students Organization. He believes that learning is a continuous process and considers himself a life-long learner. Cecil would like other international students to know that he feels his learning experience was the same as for any domestic student. He states that it is easy to navigate through the courses and that the MSHS faculty members are approachable. | |
Cecil James was recently accepted at the University of Bridgeport for his Doctorate in Health Sciences, Clinician Track Program. Winkler County Memorial Hospital awarded him a $20,000 scholarship for furthering his studies. |

Name: Jacqueline Trevino Why UTRGV? I chose to continue my education at UTRGV after graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Biology. I knew how extensive and well-rounded my education experience was at UTRGV and was hyped to come back and pursue a master’s degree. Not to mention it’s easily accessible from where I live and has very competitive pricing per course hour. |

Congratulations to Jack Brogdon, MS Health Sciences, Class of 2018, on his recent acceptance to the Doctor of Philosophy in Health Professions Education program at Bellarmine University. Jack’s healthcare career has included vocational nursing and long term care administration. After completing his MS Health Science degree with a concentration in Healthcare Administration at UTRGV, Jack is continuing his education with a goal of making a difference in healthcare through research and education. |
The Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences would like to congratulate MS Health Sciences (Health Informatics concentration) Graduate Student Omar Nedzelsky, Jr., for being awarded the Global Student Leadership Award. Diversity Abroad announced the 2020 Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education (EDIIE) awardees. The recipients have developed innovative practices, conducted original research and championed inclusive excellence, all with the aim toward preparing diverse students for academic and career success through equitable access to global education. |

Omar currently promotes internationalization on campus at UTRGV through his Graduate Assistantship with the International Programs & Partnerships office. Omar’s personal study abroad experiences sparked his desire to help other students to have a similar experience. Omar founded UTRGV’s Study Abroad Club to help raise funds for UTRGV students to gain this important learning experience. Omar’s work with UTRGV’s Study Abroad Club has received recognition and funding several times throughout his tenure with the club.
