The CVZED Internship program places students with local and regional public health offices, including the Hidalgo County Health Department.  Ms. Abrianna Carrera worked a of pubic health awareness and education survey which was feature in this news report.

Mock Investigation of a Case Study

First Public Seminar – September 29, 2021
The Center for Vector-Borne, Zoonotic, and Emerging Diseases (CVBZED) held its inaugural public seminar with a presentation by Dr. Beatriz Tapia, UTRGV Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Assistant Dean of Faculty Development at the UTRGV School of Medicine.

Dr. Erin Schuenzel later presented “From DNA to Diagnostics: Creating Molecular Diagnostics for Emerging Pathogens and Pests”. This seminar explained how DNA-based molecular diagnostics are created and used, and how viruses, bacteria, and insect pests are monitored in South Texas. With COVID-19 testing in the news, the presentation also helped clarify the science behind diagnostic testing.
