Past CVBZED Community Seminars

First Public Seminar – September 29, 2021
The Center for Vector-Borne, Zoonotic, and Emerging Diseases (CVBZED) held its inaugural public seminar with a presentation by Dr. Beatriz Tapia, UTRGV Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Assistant Dean of Faculty Development at the UTRGV School of Medicine.

Topic: Arboviruses in South Texas – Vulnerable Populations
Date: September 29, 2021, 3:44 PM Central Time

Dr. Erin Schuenzel later presented “From DNA to Diagnostics: Creating Molecular Diagnostics for Emerging Pathogens and Pests”. This seminar explained how DNA-based molecular diagnostics are created and used, and how viruses, bacteria, and insect pests are monitored in South Texas. With COVID-19 testing in the news, the presentation also helped clarify the science behind diagnostic testing.
