BESO - Bilingual Education Student Organization
The Bilingual Education Student Organization (BESO) advocates for bilingualism and biculturalism throughout our community. BESO was created in 1990 with a vision to help make a positive impact on surrounding communities and schools throughout the RGV. BESO has evolved and is now open to students, staff, faculty, and to the rest of the community on the Edinburg, Brownsville and Rio Grande City campuses.
At weekly meetings and during social events, members can share ideas, practices and information about bilingual education, develop support groups, learn about the newest research, and network with others who have similar bilingual and bicultural goals. BESO meetings often feature guest speakers and community leaders who are professionally affiliated with or knowledgeable about bilingual education in our community.
BESO members are also involved in social, professional, and volunteer activities that embrace student participation in various settings that fit all majors who are interested in bilingualism. Throughout the semester BESO holds weekly fundraisers such as elote en vaso, chicharrones preparados and aguas frescas. These funds help to gain professional development by paying for attendance at leadership conferences and workshops.
