Mission
The Department of Bilingual and Literacy Studies is dedicated to supporting the education of our diverse student population in monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual settings. Our faculty and students are deeply committed to understanding the linguistic and literacy strengths of traditionally underserved populations. We actively examine the educational requirements of children in these communities and implement curriculum, instruction, and policies that promote their language and literacy achievement.
Accreditation
The UTRGV Educator Preparation Program is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) meeting rigorous standards and processes for educator preparation through quality assurance and continuous improvement.

The Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies prepares highly skilled professionals to assume roles and positions in teaching, research, educational leadership, and human development, and to contribute to the educational achievement of children in elementary settings. Students are prepared to seek EC-6 teacher certification and a supplemental certification in Bilingual Education, English as a Second Language, or Special Education.

The Master’s degree in Bilingual Education is an innovative and unique program with several concentrations. The program is designed to develop master teachers and advocates with a thorough understanding of effective enrichment of bilingual education and practices that not only meet the educational needs of Spanish speakers but also provide bilingual/biliterate/bicultural enrichment opportunities for all children.

Master of Education in Reading and Literacy
Program Modality: Online
The Master’s degree in Reading and Literacy prepares PK-12-grade teachers in the practical and theoretical aspects of reading. The program specializes in literacy within bilingual, multilingual, transnational, and immigrant contexts. Within the specializations offered, students will learn about the reading process, how people learn to read, and how bilingual/ESL issues impact reading.
BESO strives to promote bilingualism and biculturalism within our community.
GABE is dedicated to advocating for bilingual students by fostering the exchange of ideas and values.
