Admissions

Apply to the program through the Graduate College application.

The Bilingual M.Ed. admission requirements are:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a recognized international equivalent in a similar or related field.
  2. Undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0. If you do not meet the minimum undergraduate GPA criterion, the GRE General test is required with minimum scores of 150 Verbal, 141 Quantitative, and 4.0 Analytical. GRE test scores are valid for five years.
  3. Official transcripts from each institution attended (must be submitted directly to UTRGV)
  4. Personal statements (500 words total):
    1. Write 250 words in English explaining your interest in graduate studies and
    2. Write 250 words for your chosen specialization:
      1. Dual Language Specialization (en español, explique su interés en ambientes y aulas bilingües.
      2. ESL Specialization (in English, explain your interest in students who speak languages other than English)
  5. Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic sources. You will enter the email addresses of your recommenders in the online application system; the system will send an automated email asking for a recommendation.
  6. Résumé including educational background and work experience.
  7. Documentation of one of the following:
    1. Teacher certification in the U.S., or
    2. Licenciatura or equivalent from another country, in a field related to education or language, or
    3. Employment in a charter school, a private school, or a community college.
    4. For applicants without teaching certification or experience, conditional admission may be considered.
  8. Domestic applicants who attended foreign universities or international applicants have additional requirements. Please see the Graduate College website.
