What is Anxiety & How Common is It?
Experiencing some anxiety can be adaptive as an optimal amount of anxiety can motivate us and help us to function. Too much anxiety, however, can be crippling and can lead to an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are very common in children and adults and, as a group, are the most common psychological disorder. In fact, up to 1/3 of use will experience an anxiety disorder at some point in our lives. Although anxiety disorders can be painful and disabling and are often linked to other disorders, such as depression and substance abuse, the good news is that we have some very effective treatments for anxiety.

Dental Phobia & Its Relationship to Negative Health
The Behavioral Health Lab is one of the few research labs in the country that studies dental phobia. Dental phobia, which is the fear and avoidance of going to the dentist, is a common disorder. People with dental phobia typically experience extreme anxiety when they think about going to the dentist or when they actually visit the dentist. Examining ways to prevent and treat dental phobia is important because not only does dental phobia lead to poor oral health, but poor oral health can lead to other health complications as the mouth is the "gateway to the body."
