French

Minor in French Language, Literature, and Culture

The 18-hour minor in French Language, Literature and Culture expects students to develop proficiency in French by focusing on the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Content area courses serve to improve language, while broadening cultural knowledge of French and Francophone history, art, and literature. The program also prepares students for careers in teaching, international relations and business, as well as graduate programs. Congruent with UTRGV’s mission statement, it also encourages students to become more effective participants in the global community of the twenty-first century by fostering not only fluency in French, but also critical and creative thinking skills and a flexibility of the mind.


Minor in French Teaching, Translation, and Culture

The 24-hour Minor in French Teaching, Translation, and Culture expects students to develop proficiency in French by focusing on the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Content area courses serve to improve language, while broadening cultural knowledge of French and Francophone history, art, and literature. Advanced courses in language, literature, and culture as well as translation are designed to prepare students for careers in teaching and translation. Congruent with UTRGV’s mission statement, the program also encourages students to become more effective participants in the global community of the twenty-first century by fostering not only fluency in French, but also critical and creative thinking skills and a flexibility of the mind.


French Minors Requirements

FRENCH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, AND CULTURE – 18 hours

FRENCH TEACHING, TRANSLATION, AND CULTURE – 24 hours

Credit by proficiency exams can be used to fulfill required courses at any level. 

 

French Core - 12 hours= Four Courses

1. FREN 1311 - offered every semester and summer terms

2. FREN 1312 - offered every semester and summer terms

3. FREN 2311 - offered in spring semesters (in class and online)

4. FREN 2312 - offered in fall semesters (in class and online)

 

Prescribed French Electives - 6 hours for the FRENCH LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, AND CULTURE                     

5. FREN 3321-Advanced French Grammar I - offered in fall semesters (in class and online)

+ ANY Advanced French Course (see list of frequently offered coursed below)

  • FREN 2323 - Introduction to French Cinema in English - offered in fall semesters (in class and online)                  
  • FREN 2382 - Introduction to French Literature in English - offered in fall semesters (in class and online)                          
  • FREN 3322 - Advanced French Grammar II - offered every other spring semester (in class and online)                            
  • FREN 4325 - Introduction to French Culture and Civilization - offered every other spring semester
  • FREN 4120 - French Culture on Location - offered as study abroad in the summer semester
