How to Apply
Apply online at https://applytexas.org by submitting a “Returning” application.
Admissions Requirements
All we need is a new completed application from ApplyTexas to re-instate your status as an active student.
Service members or reservists who have a break in attendance due to service requirements will be readmitted to the institution and academic program enrolled prior to the required service. No additional application or documentation is required. Please email admissions@utrgv.edu with your semester of enrollment.
For International applicants, a $50 non-refundable application fee will apply.
After Admission
- Reactivate your Account and Log in to myUTRGV (with your username and password)
- Check your status online and clear any holds, if applicable, as this may prevent registration.
- Provide proof of meningitis vaccination (If Applicable)
In accordance with Texas law, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley requires all first -time students, including transfer and returning students under the age of 22 to submit evidence that the student has been vaccinated against bacterial meningitis 10 days prior to the first class day of the semester or to provide other documentation establishing why such a vaccination is not required.
Students under the age of 22 year of age will not be allowed to enroll without providing proof of the vaccination or exemption.
All first-time students, including transfer and returning students, under the age of 22 year of age must provide one of the following documents to the Office of Admissions:
- A "Bacterial Meningitis Immunization Record" signed by a health practitioner evidencing that the student has been vaccinated against bacterial meningitis or any other official state or local immunization record. Vaccinations must - be administered no more than 5 years and no fewer than 10 days prior to the first day of the semester for which the student is
enrolling. - A "Refusal of Immunization for Medical Reasons" signed by a physician who is licensed and registered to practice medicine in the United States which states the physician's opinion that states the required vaccination would be injurious to the health and well-being of the student.
- A "Texas Department of State Health Services Conscientious Exemption" signed by the student stating that the student has declined the vaccination for reasons of conscience, including religious belief.
Academic Planning - Review your degree plan with your advisor (optional) as degree requirements could have changed since you last enrolled. To schedule a virtual advising session, call 956-665-7120 or use your UTRGV account to email academicadvising@utrgv.edu. In your email, include your name, UTRGV ID#, contact information (phone #), major, days and times you are available, and your preference for either a Zoom or telephone session.
Additional Admission Application for Certain Majors - If you applied for a program that has a separate admissions process, such as Business, Education, Nursing, Social Work, etc., contact the department for information on the application process and deadlines.
Register for Courses Online through ASSIST (click for registration dates and information)
Check on your Financial Aid and Scholarships Awards - Make sure you log in to ASSIST to stay up to date with your financial aid. Whether it’s a grant, scholarship or other financial award, this is really important information to make sure you pay your tuition and fees on time.
Academic and Financial Aid Standing – Students on either Academic or Financial Aid Suspension can contact U Central to review their options or submit an appeal at https://enrollment.utrgv.edu/Appeals.
Returning students who attended another college/university after their last term at UTRGV are required to submit college transcripts to have their coursework evaluated within the first term of reenrollment. Transcripts must be sent directly from the institution(s) attended electronically or by mail or may be hand delivered as long as the document is in a sealed envelope from the institution.

Academic Fresh Start
As stated in Section 51.931 of the Texas Education Code, an applicant to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has the right to seek admission under the "Right to An Academic Fresh Start" policy. Applicants who seek admission under this section will have all undergraduate academic credits or grades, 10 or more years prior to the starting date of the semester in which the applicant seeks to enroll, excluded from calculation of the undergraduate GPA.
CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH AN ACADEMIC FRESH START MAY BE GRANTED
An Academic Fresh Start may be granted one time only.To be eligible for an Academic Fresh Start the student/applicant:
- must be classified as a Texas Resident for tuition purposes,
- must submit all official transcripts from other institutions, regardless of whether an Academic Fresh Start has been granted at any previous institution.
Undergraduate coursework will be excluded from the cumulative GPA as follows:
- for all coursework taken 10 or more years prior to request of the Academic Fresh Start, regardless of the grade earned.
Coursework & grades excluded from the GPA due to granting of an Academic Fresh Start:
- will remain on the student's official record for audit purposes,
- will not be used as pre-requisites for subsequent coursework,
- will not be used to meet graduation requirements,
- may affect NCAA eligibility, Veteran Administration Certification or Financial Aid eligibility,
- may reclassify the student for admission purposes, requiring additional admission documents.
Any existing degree plan or commitment which considered coursework excluded from calculation of the GPA under the Academic Fresh Start policy is invalid.
The Academic Fresh Start, once granted, may not be reversed under any circumstances.
