Message from the Chair
“Tell me a story.” That phrase, more than any other, describes our department. They are the magic words that unlock endless worlds of wonder in every country and every culture. We seek to bring those tales to life through our work in theatre and film. The UTRGV Department of Theatre is a dynamic, intensive liberal arts program that allows undergraduates the opportunity to perform, design, educate and produce in the areas of theatre and film. Whether a student’s career goals focus on acting, directing, writing, design, costuming, cinematography, editing, or education, our program provides the facilities, faculty, curriculum, and opportunity. With a black-box stage, a thrust theatre stage, editing labs, extensive costume, and scenic shops, state of the art camera, editing, and lighting equipment, and a faculty comprised of experienced professionals all actively pursuing their respective crafts, the theatre department at UTRGV offers every student a total educational experience.
The UTRGV Department of Theatre is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and the Texas Educational Theatre Association. We have active membership in the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT)and University Film & Video Association (UVA), with students attending workshops and conferences yearly. We have several student theatre and film organizations such as the Latino Theatre Initiative (LTI), Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA), Alpha Psi Omega (theatre honor fraternity), and the Independent Cinema film club (ICO).
