Vaqueros Star Line Audition Information

Audition Information

Auditions are held throughout the academic year. It is recommended to attend at least one audition workshop. Follow us on Instagram @utrgvdrillteam for more updates!

Vaqueros Star Line Workshops

Throughout the academic year, the UTRGV Spirit Program hosts clinics and workshops designed to help prospective members confidently prepare for tryouts. These sessions provide an invaluable opportunity to learn directly from coaches and current team members, who offer guidance on the skills, techniques, and dedication required to succeed. Attendees gain a clear understanding of Spirit Program expectations, the tryout process, and what it means to be part of a team that embodies Vaquero pride and excellence. Participants also receive personalized feedback, tips for improvement, and the chance to experience the energy and camaraderie that define the Spirit Program.

Saturday, February 14 Vaqueros Star Line Spring Drill Team Workshop - Edinburg URec (University Recreation Building) from 8:00a-12:00p (open to all high school and college students).
Saturday, March 28 Vaqueros Star Line Audition Workshop - Brownsville El Gran Salon from 8:00a-12:00p (open to all high school seniors and college students).
Saturday, April 18 Vaqueros Star Line Audition Workshop - Edinburg URec (University Recreation Building) from 8:00a-12:00p (open to all high school seniors and college students).
Wednesday, April 22 Online Audition Registration Form and $30 Audition Fee DUE.
Friday, April 24 ROUND 1: VIDEO SUBMISSION DUE
Monday, April 27 In-person audition invitations are emailed.
Friday, May 1 PHYSICALS DUE via email: sel.gomez@utrgv.edu
Saturday, May 2 AUDITIONS: Will be held in-person by invite only at the Edinburg URec (University Recreation Building) from 8:00a-12:00p. Results are posted on social media by the end of the day.
Saturday, May 2 OFFICER AUDITIONS: Will be held in-person immediately following line member auditions from 1:00p-5:00p. Must meet minimum 1 year membership requirement.

Vaqueros Star Line Audition FAQ

A mandatory Online Candidate Application must be completed before the audition.

Be prepared to upload the following:

  • Publicity Release
  • UREC Facility Waiver
  • Headshot (PNG or JPG format)
  • Letter of Recommendation from former director or coach
  • A Physical (up-to-date and completed by a physician)
  • UTRGV Acceptance Letter (new students only)
  • Academic Transcript (transfer students only)

ROUND 1: VIDEO AUDITION 

VIDEO SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

  • Submit a current electronic copy of your physical (completed by a physician) to the Head Coach (sel.gomez@utrgv.edu). 
  • Submit a YouTube link via email to the Head Coach (sel.gomez@utrgv.edu) and cc the Asst. Drill Team Coach (jazelyn.gonzalez0101@utrgv.edu)   
  • Introduction Video (45–60 seconds) 
  • Technique (in order) and Choreography Video 

 

AUDITION ATTIRE REQUIREMENTS (Video and In-Person)

Females 

  • Wear black socks with black jazz shoes, black leggings, and a black form-fitting top (may be cropped) 
  • Hair should be worn styled in low ponytail 
  • Performance makeup and lashes should be applied (natural makeup is preferred with false lashes and a bold red lip) 
  • Tattoos must be covered with professional-grade makeup (no band aids) 
  • No jewelry or piercings of any kind (stud earrings are acceptable) 
  • MANDATORY: All-black dancewear 

Males 

  • Wear a fitted T-shirt or tank top, shorts or jazz pants, and black jazz shoes 
  • Clean-cut hairstyle and clean shaven (no facial hair) 
  • No warm-ups or baggy clothing (slim cut joggers are acceptable) 
  • Tattoos must be covered with professional-grade makeup (no band aids) 
  • No jewelry or piercings of any kind (stud earrings are acceptable) 
  • MANDATORY: All-black dancewear 

 

VIDEO SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION VIDEO (45–60 seconds) 

– Seated position, framed from the waist or chest up (headshot-style) 
– State your name, hometown, major, classification, and why you want to be part of the program– Film horizontally (landscape) 
– Use good lighting and clean camera angles 
– No professional editing required 

VIDEO SECTION 2: TECHNIQUE AND CHOREOGRAPHY REQUIREMENTS 
– Full body and feet visible at all times 
– Film horizontally (landscape); camera may follow movement 
– Use good lighting and clean camera angles 
– No professional editing required 

All content must be submitted in the order listed under "Requirements"

VIDEO SECTION 3: DANCE COMBINATION REQUIREMENTS 

3 combos — minimum 30 seconds, maximum 45 seconds each | Precision Jazz • High Kick • Pom (previous choreography is allowed) 

 

ROUND 2: ADVANCE TO ROUND 2 

  • Selected dancers will receive an email that includes a link to the audition choreography and an invitation by the Head Coach to attend in-person auditions.  
  • Must provide 2 email references in the online registration form and be paid in full. 
  • The Head Coach will email your references directly. Recommendation letters from current or former dance directors/coaches must be emailed to the Head Coach (sel.gomez@utrgv.edu) and cc the Asst. Drill Team Coach (jazelyn.gonzalez01@utrgv.edu) by the given deadline.  
  • Questionnaire must be completed by both references by the given deadline 

Although all uniforms practice wear, gear, and equipment is provided by the university, there is a non-refundable $30 Audition Fee which covers the audition and workshop.

This is a professional audition, and you want to look and feel your best. Think of this audition as a performance.

Auditions are closed to the public. Only candidates, coaches, and adjudicators are allowed in the facility.

Final results will be posted on our social media pages no later than the end of the audition day.
