- Apr 14th, 2020: New Course in the Fall! EEMS 5360 -SOIL SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION: Dr. Engil Pereira will be teaching the upcoming EEMS 5360, Soil Science and Conservation! - Feb 19th, 2020: TRESS is recruiting for USDA-NRCS Summer Internships! If you are a UTRGV undergraduate student majoring in Environmental Sciences , Sustainable Agriculture , or Biology have a GPA greater than 2.5 , and have a valid driver’s license this is for you! TRESS is offering a 10-week paid internship starting in June 2020. There are multiple positions available across the country in disciplines associated with Agriculture, Natural Resources and Engineering (Civil, Agricultural, & Environmental) Hispanic students and students from other underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. - Jan 28th, 2020: USDA's Ruby De La Garza's workshop “Applying for Summer Internship Opportunities with the United States Department of Agriculture” USDA Program Officer, Ruby De La Garza will be giving a workshop on “Applying for Summer Internship Opportunities with the United States Department of Agriculture”. This opportunity gives you an excellent opportunity to see how the USDA works and to get some solid work experience! The workshop will be given at CSTEM in EMAGC 2.412 on Tuesday January 28, 2020 between 12.30 to 1.30 pm. Students can join in person at C-STEM or online using Zoom. For more information click here!
- Dec 13th, 2019 San Antonio, TX: TRESS in Soil Science Society of America ( SSSA): TRESS Students make their way to San Antonio, TX in order to present their poster at the 2019 Soil Science Society of America Conference!

- Nov 14th, 2019: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) hosts Workshop for SEEMs Students. Ms. Ruby De La Garza offered students in Soil Science a workshop on jobs and internships at USDA. Ms. Ruby de La Garza is an education specialist with the USDA.
- Nov 13th, 2019: TRESS student wins 1st place in 1st Annual GIS (Geographic Information System) Day : Lilly Elliott , an undergraduate majoring in Environmental Science won first place in the first annual GIS Day event that occured 11/13/2019 with her poster: " Use of Spatial Interpolation in predicting Nutrient Availability in Agricultural Fields". She had six Spatial Interpolation maps on display showing changes in concentrations of Phosphorus, Inorganic Nitrogen, and pH over two depths (0-10cm and 10-20cm).
- Oct 20th-Nov 17th, 2019: Sweet Potato Harvest 2019 - Join us 11/17/2019 for Sweet Potato Harvesting! All that help are welcome to take some home! Contact Isaiah ( isaiah.jaramillo01@utrgv.edu) if interested in volunteering.

10/27/2019 - The time has come for Jon Dale and Isaiah Jaramillo's Sweet Potato's to be harvested! They survived a week long flooding, can they survive the harvesting process?
10/20/2019 - Isaiah Jaramillo is harvesting biomass for his Research project alongside Graduate student, Jon Dale.

Gaspar Najera, TRESS undergraduate student under Dr. Fierro’s mentorship, presents at the UTRGV Engaged Scholar Symposium his research on greenhouse gas emissions in Mangrove sites.
The title of his research was: “Soil Carbon Fluxes in a Mangrove-Marsh-Mudflat Continuum of the Lower Laguna Madre”.
TRESS student featured as “UTRGV Profile in Excellence”
UTRGV now offers a Certificate in Soil Science open to all majors!
On Friday March 22 nd 2019 , TRESS team received the approval from the UTRGV Undergraduate Curriculum Committee to offer a certificate in soil science that conveniently provides the requirements for positions within USDA/NRCS, USDA/Forest Service, and other agencies. To obtain the Certificate in Soil Science, students will take 15 hours of soil science courses. These courses are open to students in all majors. Environmental Science students can take these courses as part of their degree plan (25 hours upper division electives).
- ENVR 4320 Fundamentals of Soil Science (offered in Fall 2019)
- ENVR 4321 Soil Ecology
- ENVR 4322 Soil Chemistry
- ENVR 4323 Soil Physics and Hydrology (offered in Fall 2019)
- ENVR 4324 Soil Conservation
