Title: "Automation of the Time Domain Spectroscopy System for Terahertz Radiation"
Mentor: Dr. Myoung-Hwan Kim
Terahertz (THz) radiation occurs between microwave region and infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Short pulses of electromagnetic radiation at terahertz frequencies continue to attract interest in science and technology. In particular, terahertz radiation finds many applications in medical research and security technologies.
Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy, or THz-TDS, is a method for determination of the properties of matter by probing it with short pulses of THz radiation. THz-TDS requires automated control of data acquisition. The goal of this project is to develop a control system for THz-TDS, including:
- development of a program for control of the time delay of near-infrared pulses using motorized translation stage.
- application of the automation program to the THz-TDS beam alignment setup.
LabView programming language was selected for this project because it provides a set of tools for storing, displaying, and analyzing data.
Using LabView environment the data was collected from THz-TDS beam alignment setup. The THz signal was read using lock-in amplifier which collects averaged voltage from the balanced photodetector system. The time-domain data can be transformed into frequency domain using Fourier Transform. The results of this project will be used for automated THz-TDS system for analysis of metasurfaces in the THz spectral regime.
