Student Engagement

STUDENT OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSOCIATION (SOTA)

The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) is a social and service organization for students.  SOTA was officially recognized as a UTRGV student organization in April 1997.

As a nonprofit organization, SOTA’s mission is to generate service, interest, and awareness to the community of the Rio Grande Valley about occupational therapy.  SOTA strives to promote unity within the Occupational Therapy field at a local, state, and national level, while providing services to groups and organizations in the community. Through active participation members will experience leadership opportunities and learn the importance of giving and its rewards.

The Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) offers members and people interested in the field of occupational therapy, opportunities to engage in community and on-campus activities. SOTA provides its members with current information on occupational therapy and its professional organizations.  We also present speakers in or related to the field of occupational therapy. (Membership is mandatory while in the OT program.)

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

TEXAS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSOCIATION (http://www.tota.org/ )

The Texas Occupational Therapy Association (TOTA) is a State Affiliate of AOTA and represents the local and regional organizations responsible for representing the interests of occupational therapy personnel. (Student membership is mandatory while in the OT program.)

AMERICAN OCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSOCIATION (AOTA) (http://www.aota.org )

The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) is the nationally recognized professional association of occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and students of occupational therapy.

The cost of membership is nominal and includes subscriptions to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy.  Student members also receive membership in an AOTA Special Interest Section, and discounts on conference registration and AOTA publications.

Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD)

The membership of the Assembly of Student Delegates (ASD) is made up of the student members of AOTA.  Annually, the ASD Delegate from each educational program in the United States represents the school at the ASD Pre-Conference delegate Meetings.  ASD provides a mechanism for the expression of student concerns and offers a means whereby students can have effective input into the affairs of AOTA.  As a standing committee of the Executive Board, the ASD Steering Committee represents the student point of view to the Executive Board, the Representative Assembly, the Commission on Practice, the Commission on Education, and all other bodies of AOTA as needed.

WORLD FEDERATION OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS (http://wfot.org /)

The World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT) is the key international representative for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy around the world and the official international organization for the promotion of Occupational Therapy.  Individuals may become members of WFOT if their nation is a member association.  U.S. occupational therapy personnel, including students, may join WFOT by including their nominal membership dues with their AOTA annual membership enrollment.
