About
What is an Ombuds, Ombudsperson, or Ombudsman?
The modern term Ombudsman has its origins in the Swedish language and essentially means “representative”. According to the International Ombudsman Association (IOA), an Ombudsman is someone who serves the community as “a designated neutral” within a specific organization. The guiding priniciples of the position include confidential, informal, independent, and neutral assistance.
What is the role of the Faculty Ombuds?
The Faculty Ombuds is a neutral individual who listens to complaints or concerns of faculty and provides conflict resolution services. Communications with the Ombuds remain strictly confidential unless express permission to do otherwise is granted by the visitor or if the Ombuds is required to disclose based on applicable University policy, legal considerations, or perceived imminent risk of harm to self or others. The Ombuds does not advocate on behalf of any one person or group but will advocate for a fair and unbiased process and consider the rights and concerns of all involved. The Ombuds communicates with various representatives and offices to respond to and help resolve concerns in a timely manner.
