Honor recognizes her leadership and service to higher education

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – SEPT. 14, 2026 – Dr. Magdalena “Maggie” Hinojosa, UTRGV executive vice president for Strategic Initiatives and Student Affairs and deputy to the president, has been named a 2026 Distinguished Alumna by Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

The university’s most prestigious alumni honor recognizes graduates whose professional achievements, leadership and service have brought distinction to their alma mater.

“Dr. Hinojosa has devoted her career to expanding educational opportunities and helping students succeed,” UTRGV President Guy Bailey said. “Her leadership has had a tremendous impact on UTRGV and the Rio Grande Valley, and this recognition is a fitting tribute to her many years of service.” 

Hinojosa has worked in higher education since 1993, building a career focused on college access, enrollment management and student success. At UTRGV, she leads the university’s enrollment management strategy and oversees efforts to enhance the overall student experience and well-being. She also advises the president on key institutional priorities and initiatives.

Her recognition comes as UTRGV continues to reach new enrollment milestones. The university welcomed 36,466 students to open the Fall 2026 semester, setting a first-day enrollment record for the seventh consecutive year. That included UTRGV’s largest freshman class, with 7,373 incoming freshmen, a 2% increase from Fall 2025. 

Hinojosa said receiving the honor is deeply humbling and meaningful, reflecting the lasting influence TAMUK has had on her life and career.

“My education provided the foundation for my career and instilled in me a deep commitment to advancing students’ social mobility and creating opportunities that strengthen their families for generations to come,” she said. “It is especially rewarding to contribute and support UTRGV’s continued growth and impact on the Rio Grande Valley.” 

Hinojosa earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas A&I University, now Texas A&M-Kingsville, in 1991. She earned a master’s degree in public administration from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership through a joint program involving the two universities in 2004.

She also serves on the College Board’s Board of Trustees, representing the Southwestern Region, and has held leadership roles in state and national higher education organizations.

Hinojosa, one of nine honorees, will be recognized October 30 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
