RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – AUGUST 26, 2026 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley welcomed 36,466 students Wednesday to open the Fall 2026 semester, setting a first-day enrollment record for the seventh consecutive year.
The record-setting start extended across undergraduate, graduate and professional programs:
- Freshman enrollment – UTRGV welcomed its largest freshman class with 7,373 incoming freshmen, up 2% from Fall 2025.
- Doctoral enrollment – Enrollment reached a record 790 doctoral students, up 15% from Fall 2025.
- Master’s enrollment – A total of 3,933 master’s students enrolled this fall, increasing 5.4% from Fall 2025.
- Podiatric medicine – Enrollment climbed to 121 students, up from 109 in Fall 2025 for the School of Podiatric Medicine.
- Medical education – The School of Medicine reached 228 students, including an incoming class of 56 with the largest Rio Grande Valley representation since the school’s founding.
Growth in UTRGV’s School of Podiatric Medicine and School of Medicine reflects the university’s broader mission to educate healthcare professionals who understand the region and can help improve access to care across South Texas.
UTRGV President Guy Bailey said seven consecutive years of record first-day enrollment speaks to the university’s continued momentum and the confidence students and families are placing in UTRGV.
“Setting an enrollment record once is significant. Doing it seven years in a row tells you something much bigger about what UTRGV has become,” Bailey said. “Students are choosing us because they see the quality, value and opportunities available here, and they believe UTRGV is a place where they can build their future. Their confidence in this university is the greatest measure of our success.”
EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY
Dr. Magdalena Hinojosa, executive vice president for Strategic Initiatives and Student Affairs and deputy to the president, said the enrollment milestones demonstrate UTRGV’s ability to provide educational pathways for students at every level.
“These numbers show the breadth of opportunity UTRGV is creating for students,” Hinojosa said. “From welcoming our largest freshman class to expanding graduate and professional education, we are creating more pathways for students to earn a degree, advance their education and prepare for careers that will strengthen the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.”
Affordability remains central to UTRGV’s commitment to access. Programs such as Tuition Advantage and the Luminary Scholars Program, along with guaranteed tuition and a 12-hour tuition cap, help make the cost of a UTRGV education more affordable for students and families.
With its first decade complete, UTRGV enters its next chapter focused on expanding opportunity, strengthening the region and building on the momentum reflected in this fall’s record enrollment.
