Who We Are

Welcome to the UTRGV Multicultural Clinical Lab! We are under the leadership of
Dr. Alfonso Mercado, the Director of the MCL lab.

Mission Statement

The Multicultural Psychology Lab is dedicated to produce new knowledge in order to deepen the understanding of multicultural mental health. Our lab seeks to improve access to treatment for underserved populations by advancing the development and implementation of sensitive treatments for culturally diverse groups according to the APA Cultural Competency Guidelines to assessment and treatment.

Currently, our research interests are focused on developing culturally sensitive treatments for Latinx populations by integrating relevant Latinx cultural values, examining trauma and resiliency in the recent immigrant population, understanding the dynamics of the U.S.-Mexico border and the mental health in this borderland, as well as investigating the effects of perceived stigma among caretakers of individuals diagnosed with an intellectual disability.

Furthermore, our lab is committed to encouraging students from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds to pursue careers in social sciences and mental health. Please feel free to browse and learn about our lab. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, or are interested in joining our lab, do not hesitate to contact us.
