Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I…

Make a Public Information Request (including Police Reports)?

To request a police report or other information under the Texas Public Information Act, you must submit a written request to the Public Information Officer. In making a request, you should include the following information: (a) name and contact information, (b) phone number, and (c) a description of the information you are interested in (as specific as possible), including time periods. Requests can be delivered directly to the Office of Legal Affairs at 1201 West University Dr., Ste. 3.101, Edinburg, Texas 78539, or emailed to publicinformation@utrgv.edu.

The Office of Legal Affairs must first obtain the requested information from the individual departments holding the information and reviewed before it can be made available to the requestor. This process can take up to ten business days, depending on the availability of the information from the individual departments, the number of requests pending, or other factors.

For more information, please see our Texas Public Information Act web page.

Request a Transcript?

Current and former UTRGV students and former students of The University of Texas – Pan American (UTPA) or The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) requiring their official academic record may request a transcript using UTRGV’s online ordering service. For more information, please visit U Central’s Transcript Request page.

Request Verification of Employment?

The Office of Human Resources is responsible for providing employment verification information related to present or former employees of UTRGV, The University of Texas – Pan American, or The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College. More information about the employment verification process is available from the Office of Human Resources.

What Happens If…

I receive a legal process, citation, notice/demand, or subpoena?

All legal process, citations, notices/demands, and subpoenas must be handled quickly and properly. Failure to do so may adversely affect or greatly complicate pending litigation.

Upon receipt, legal documents should be immediately forwarded to the Office of Legal Affairs. If the document does not indicate on whom and on what date the document was served, such information should be clearly written on the face of the document (e.g., served on me personally, Jane Doe, 2/1/2019).

Please contact the Office of Legal Affairs if you have any questions.

I have a personal legal question?

The Office of Legal Affairs cannot provide legal advice to employees, faculty, or students on personal legal matters, such as criminal matters, landlord-tenant matters, family or estate matters, or tax matters. If you think you need an attorney, the following organizations may be able to provide assistance in identifying an attorney who might be able to help you:

Lawyer Referral & Information Service (State Bar of Texas)

Hidalgo County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid
