Internships – FAQs
How is a student matched with an internship?
- Being matched to an internship site is a multi-step process. The initial internship application is vetted by the UT Health Houston internship team. If the applicant is determined to meet internship eligibility criteria, the next step is a background check. The link to complete the background check will be emailed to the internship applicant. After successful completion of the background check, the student is tentatively matched with an internship site. The student’s resume is sent to the internship site for review. It is reviewed by site personnel and a decision is made about moving forward with an interview. Only after successful completion of an interview, will the student be considered “matched” to an internship site.
Are students eligible to apply for more than one GET PHIT Internship?
- Students may only complete one GET PHIT Internship.
What are the daily tasks of the internship?
- Daily tasks completed by GET PHIT Interns will be determined by each individual internship site. However, undergraduate students with less training can expect to be helping with data cleaning or database development. More advanced students might have the opportunity to use data visualization and data programming tools.
If I have not attended a Bootcamp, am I still eligible for an internship?
- All students enrolled in a GET PHIT educational institution, with a strong interest in public health informatics and data science, are eligible to apply for the paid internship program. Students from underrepresented minority populations are strongly encouraged to apply. However, those students who have earned a Certificate of Completion from a GET PHIT Bootcamp, have evidence of training needed to successfully complete a GET PHIT Internship.
