BMED Peer Mentors
Peer Mentors
The HHMI Inclusive Excellence award allows us to provide mentoring to incoming BMED students, during the first year in the program. All BMED Peer Mentors complete the Eduology Peer Mentoring Certificate Course. The Eduology course “teaches students about the role, ethics, and skills involved in peer mentoring and provides practical assignments to help students apply learning to their peer mentoring sessions and reflect on the experience.”
In their roles as experienced navigators of college life, mentors facilitate a sense of community between students, the program, and the campus. This includes assistance connecting students with campus and community resources, such as academic advising services, assistance with course registration and orientation. BMED students meet with their assigned mentors at least twice per semester to share their progress and learn about important information and upcoming events.
Apply to Peer Mentors
BMED peer-mentors are current students in our program who can apply through the UTRGV Handshake portal and are selected after careful review of applications, when openings are available. They receive hourly wages and typically work 19hrs/week.
Career Exploration
There are numerous opportunities for our students to engage in career exploration. To support students’ career exploration needs, we host presenters from different health programs. In addition, we continually provide updates on available scholarships, job shadowing opportunities and paid internships.
Feedback and Implementation
Our student support services are regularly assessed using focus groups and surveys designed to determine program strengths and areas for improvement. Students are given the opportunity to provide feedback on all facets of the program, which is promptly used to improve services.
