Summer Internships

MD Anderson Cancer Center – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley
Summer Undergraduate Cancer Research Internship

The BS in Biomedical Science Program (BMED) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) explores the application of powerful modern bioscience approaches such as biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, genetics, and genomics, as well as anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience to human health. BMED is a preparatory degree for tomorrow's health care professionals, scientists, educators, and leaders and thus prepares students for successful admission to professional schools in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs as well as graduate studies in biomedical sciences.

This competitive 10-week summer research internship program at MD Anderson Cancer Center is designed for outstanding UTRGV BMED students who are interested in continuing on to graduate school and a career in cancer research. The program will not be providing any funding to support the students.

The application deadline for this internship program is January 14th. Students accepted to the program will be notified by January 31st.

For more information, please contact Dr. Sue Anne Chew, Program Director, Biomedical Freshman Research Initiative (BFRI) and Program Director, Rio Grande Valley Bridge to Baccalaureate Program in Biomedical Sciences (B2BMED) at sueanne.chew@utrgv.edu or 956-882 6518.

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences center
Graduate College

The Graduate College at the OU Health Sciences Center also hosts four summer undergraduate research programs aimed at preparing and encouraging undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research or health-related sciences. Studies show undergraduate research programs are beneficial to the success of applying to and completing a graduate degree program. Our programs introduce outstanding undergraduate students to the rigorous academic preparation required to achieve these goals, through participation in intensive, full-time (40 hours/week), hands-on research experiences in the laboratories of OUHSC biomedical faculty mentors in Oklahoma City.

SURP applications will open on November 1st with a deadline of January 31st, 2022. More information about our summer programs can be found at the SURP website or by contacting us at SURP@ouhsc.edu.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program

The Pediatric Oncology Education program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is funded by the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute. The program offers a unique opportunity for pre-doctoral students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, and pharmacy to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. Students participate in basic or clinical oncology research, research and clinical conferences, and a core lecture series designed specifically for them. All participants make a PowerPoint presentation on their research project and submit a report on their research project written in the style of a journal in which their faculty mentor publishes. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it is likely that our 2021 program will be primarily virtual. Thus, data analysis skills and experience that would be helpful for remote projects will be advantageous.

The deadline for receipt of all 2021 application materials will be February 1, 2021. Students should submit their application without waiting for their recommenders to submit letters of recommendation. Applicants are encouraged to get all their credentials in by mid-late December, so that they can be considered for early placement. Those applying after January 1 run a high risk of not having all their credentials submitted by the deadline.

For more information visit: St. Jude's - Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program page.
