ABRCMS
Congratulations Eloy Lozoya on being recognized as a Presentation Awardee at the 2019 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Anaheim, California for his presentation titled “Mesenchymal Stem Cells Transfected with Osteogenic Inducing MicroRNAs for Bone Tissue Engineering”.
ABRCMS 2017: Promoting Change and Transformation
When you attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), you join one of the largest communities of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students attend this conference to present their research, explore graduate schools, and network. Research faculty and program directors play an essential role in mentoring students and strategies for facilitating student success.
During the four-day conference, over 1,800 students from over 350 colleges and universities participate in poster and oral presentations in twelve STEM disciplines. All undergraduate student presentations are judged and those receiving the highest scores in each scientific discipline will be given an award during the closing banquet.
Congratulations ABRCMS Winners 2017!
Astrid Gutierrez
Biology Student (Junior)
Winning Poster: The Evaluation of Different Osteogenic Inducing MicroRNAs for Bone Tissue Engineering
Major: Biology (Junior)
Mentor: Dr. Sue Anne Chew (Health and Biomedical Sciences Faculty)
Lab Research Focus: BioEngineering
I want to be a medical doctor, establish my own clinic, and eventually work for a non-profit health organization. Working as an undergraduate research assistant has been a privilege. My experience in the lab has improved my critical thinking skills and enhanced my knowledge in the biomedical field.
Raul Ordonez
BMED Scholar (Sophomore)
Winning Poster: Role of the P160/ Steroid Receptor Coactivator in Uterine Biology
Mentor: Dr. Michael Lehker (Dean of the College of Health Affair and Health and Biomedical Sciences Faculty)
Lab Research Focus: Infectious diseases
Major: Biomedical Sciences (Sophomore)
Career Goal: Pursue and a MD/Ph.D.
Programs: Biomedical Freshman Research Initiative and MBRS-RISE
I am a first-generation college student pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Biomedical Science. My parents migrated from Mexico City in order to provide an opportunity for me to obtain a higher education. Ever since I was a kid I always said I wanted to become a Doctor and I am grateful for all the mentors that have helped me get one step closer to my dream. I began conducting research since I was 16 years old and have since been curious to many questions that are still unanswered. To this day I am still conducting research and looking forward to pursuing my dream of becoming Physician or Physician Scientist (M.D./Ph.D.). I have had the opportunity to travel to national conferences to present my works and have had amazing mentors along the way. I am also a Baylor College of Medicine Summer Medical and Research Training Alumni and hope to one day continue answering questions to the unknown.
Daniela Barbosa
BMED Scholar (Junior)
Winning Poster: Sizing Effects of PLGA/Minocycline Microparticles with Different Fabrication Parameter for the Treatment of Gliomas
Category: Engineering, Physics and Mathematics
Major: Biomedical Sciences
Mentor: Dr. Sue Anne Chew (Health and Biomedical Sciences Faculty)
Lab Research Focus: BioEngineering
Program: MBRS-RISE
I am Daniela Barbosa part of the Biomedical Sciences Hybrid program and am currently conducting research in Dr. SueAnne Chew's laboratory. I have been working under her guidance through MBRS-RISE since my freshman year in college, Fall 2015. I have attended two summer research internships, in summer of 2016 I went to The University of MD Anderson Cancer Center and worked in Dr. Michelle C. Barton's laboratory. Then this summer 2017 I had the privilege to attend Brown University through Leadership Alliance and work in Dr. Robert Creton's laboratory. I attended both SACNAS and ABRCMS conferences this year and had the fortune to be awarded on my UTRGV research under the engineering category in both conferences.
