Characteristics of Doctoral Programs

The Characteristics of Doctoral Programs were developed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's (THECB) Graduate Education Advisory Committee (GEAC) to provide a snapshot of doctoral programs offered by Texas public universities and health-related institutions. The information presented in the Characteristics serves as a reference for the general public who are interested in doctoral education, including prospective students and their families. The THECB has adopted rules for the Characteristics of Doctoral Programs, which may be accessed online: Texas Administrative Code


Ohio State University
College of Medicine - Discovery Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program

The Discovery Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) is an National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded program that provides an intense paid research experience in outstanding research facilities with leading investigators at The Ohio State University. 

This NIH-funded postbac program runs for one year and is designed to prepare recent college graduates for success in graduate school. Accepted scholars are provided with:  a PAID one year research experience in a laboratory with a nationally recognized research mentor in a biomedical science discipline;  Graduate Record Exam (GRE) preparation assistance; individual mentoring;  assistance with application preparation for PhD graduate programs; career development workshops; and  opportunities to travel and network with other scientists throughout the nation. If you have individuals you feel would be interested in our program, please distribute this email to them.

Individuals who are underrepresented in biomedical sciences are especially encouraged to apply.

Duke University Center for Biomolecular and Tissue Engineering

The Center for Biomolecular and Tissue Engineering (CBTE) is one of Duke University's most comprehensive efforts in biotechnology.

Our mandate is to nucleate interdisciplinary research and educational activities that link three broad areas of biotechnology: protein engineering, cellular engineering, and tissue engineering.

The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center
Graduate College

The Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) is a first-year, interdisciplinary program serving seven degree programs at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). Students will graduate with a PhD from one of the participating programs to prepare them for careers in biomedical sciences. OU Health Sciences Center is one of only a few comprehensive academic health centers in the nation. Our internationally prominent faculty, state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technology, and nearly $200 million in external funding combine to make us the leader in graduate education and research in Oklahoma.

The application portal for GPiBS is open now with a priority deadline of December 1st. The portal will remain open after the deadline; however, applications completed after December 1st are not guaranteed to be reviewed. If you have students interested in pursuing a PhD in the Biomedical Sciences, please encourage them to apply early. You can direct interested students to the GPiBS website or to us at GPIBS@ouhsc.edu for additional information or questions.

Long School of Medicine - Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics

The Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics at UT Health San Antonio are excited to welcome new students into our MS,  Immunology & Infection (I&I), and PhD,  Infection, Inflammation and Immunology (III), programs for the 2018 academic year. Applications for Fall 2018 are now open.
Both of our programs are designed to integrate the fields of immunology and infectious diseases so as to produce multidimensional graduates with problem-solving skills related to host-pathogen relationships. Each program provides not only the preparation needed for entering careers in biotech research and development, academic research laboratories, the health care infrastructure, and teaching, but also allows students who wish to pursue medical school, dental school, or Ph.D. programs to strengthen their academic credentials. The MS I&I and PhD III programs offer special opportunities to students with its plan of classroom and research study in an environment that blends the basic sciences with the clinical setting of the San Antonio Medical Center and School of Medicine.

Graduate College - Doctor of Philosophy in Integrated Biomedical Sciences

The PhD in Integrated Biomedical Sciences program prepares you to be an outstanding research scientist qualified for a position in academia, industry or administration. This biomedical sciences graduate program is an interdisciplinary approach that focuses on disease as a process that involves molecular, biochemical, cellular and organ system changes. You will use your multidisciplinary training to formulate and test research hypotheses in a highly collaborative environment of both scientists and clinical researchers.

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

UTMB is a leading academic health science center offering a wide array of training programs. Our graduate training programs address the full spectrum of basic, translational, and clinical research. Our purpose is to advance the understanding of human disease and its treatment by emerging as a leader in academia, biotech, industry, government service, or other related careers.

The GSBS offers a specially designed integrated curriculum that allows students to complete their PhD sooner than the national average, generous stipends ($29,000 for 2017); free comprehensive health insurance worth over $6,100 annually, with dental, vision, and dependent coverage available at low cost; tuition and fees paid, and a very high faculty-to-student ratio.

Marshall University
Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine - 
Marshall’s Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program offers a PhD and both a thesis and non-thesis MS. 


Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences PhD :   

  • Rotation requirement – minimum of three labs, each at least 120 hours
  • The PhD program (is optional for Research MS) begins in mid-summer so students can experience Biomedical Sciences Preparation for Graduate Academics (PGA) Boot Camp, begin their first rotation, get to know their cohort, and acclimate to the Huntington area 
  • Our primary goal through biomedical sciences is to use a translational research approach to help reduce the numerous health disparities of the Appalachian patient population and to improve health outcomes for our region.
  • Accepted PhD students will receive an annual stipend, tuition remission, and health insurance.   The current stipend is $25,000 per year.
  • Priority Deadline of November 15 and applications will be accepted until the class is full.

Marshall's is still accepting applications for its Biomedical Sciences (BMS) PhD program for this coming year. Although the priority deadline was in November, Marshall University continues to accept applications until the class is full.

  • No MCAT or GRE required
  • Pathway Program - Requirements
    • The Medical Sciences program is now an official Pathway Program into the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine (JCESOM)
    • Have a minimum 3.4 GPA in the Medical Sciences program at the time of the Marshall medical school interview and graduate with a 3.4 GPA
    • Pass the MS comprehensive exam on the first attempt in May of the second year of the program
  • Pathway Program - Benefits  Application Deadline – Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with a deadline of June 1
    • Gain an interview at JCESOM without an MCAT score (If applicant takes the MCAT and meets the other Pathway Program requirements then the MCAT will not be considered)
    • Receive a program letter of support
    • Out-of-state applicants will be interviewed at the same time as in-state students, regardless of residency. JCESOM tuition cost will be based on residency status.
  • Two year master’s degree
  • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with a deadline of June 1

Clinical and Translational Science, MS

  • First class enrolled in Fall 2016

  • The goal is to equip our students with the information and training necessary to translate basic advances into improved patient care that will enhance the quality of life for patients in the Appalachian region.

  • Graduates of Marshall’s CTS MS program will be able to lead all aspects of clinical trials of new drugs and procedures.

  • Scholarships available – Competitive application for accepted students

  • This program may be used as stepping stone to medical school

  • Application Deadline – April 1

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory 
Watson School of Biological Sciences  Ph.D Program

The Watson School of Biological Sciences is the graduate program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. We have developed an innovative Ph.D. curriculum that takes advantage of the unique environment and extensive resources offered by the Laboratory.

The program is designed for students to complete their studies in 4–5 years. To this end, they receive extensive mentoring throughout, with an academic as well as a research mentor, and complete their course work, rotations, and qualifying exam within the first year. All students are fully funded by the school—stipends, tuition, and research costs—giving them the freedom to join any lab, irrespective of whether that lab has other funding for them. In addition, they receive subsidized housing and food and full health benefits.
