Deferral of Admission
Some graduate programs allow for the deferral of admission; however, deferral of admission is not automatic. Certain departments/programs may require a new application if the student does not enroll in the semester for which they were admitted.
Deferral of admission is limited to one request per admitted program. A deferral of admission request is dependent on review and approval by both the Graduate Program Coordinator or Program Director and the Graduate College. If the deferral is denied or the deferred student cannot attend the graduate program for the approved semester, a new application for graduate admission will need to be submitted.
To request a deferral of admission, applicants should complete the Graduate Admissions Deferral Request Form. After submission, the Graduate Program Coordinator or Program Director and the Graduate College will review your request. Once a deferral decision is made, you will be notified via email to login to the application status portal.
For departments/programs that allow a deferral of admission, an admitted student may defer their admission for up to one full year from their semester of admission (i.e. admitted Fall 2021 and may defer to Spring 2022, Summer I 2021, Summer II 2021, or Fall 2022). Requests to defer beyond one full year will not be granted and a student will need to submit a new application for graduate admission.
NOTE: A deferral of admission is only available for students admitted to a program. Students that have not been offered admissions are not eligible for deferral.
International students who defer will be required to contact International Admissions and Student Services.
