Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program was created with the goal of improving intercultural relations, cultural diplomacy, and intercultural competencies through the exchange of people, knowledge, and skills. It is widely considered the most coveted distinction available to U.S. faculty and staff to study, conduct research, teach, or exercise their talents abroad.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program provides approximately 1,200 grants annually to U.S. faculty plus several hundred to other professionals. It is administered by the Institute of International Education and operates in over 160 countries around the world. The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State as well as direct and in-kind support from partner governments, foundations, corporations, and host institutions both in and outside the U.S.
Fulbright applicants must have high academic achievement, a compelling project proposal or statement of purpose, demonstrated leadership potential, and flexibility to interact successfully with the host community. Fulbright grants are awarded in almost all academic disciplines, except clinical medical research involving patient contact. The fields of study span the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural and physical sciences, and professional and applied sciences.
UTRGV highly values a Fulbright experience among its faculty and staff. Hence, it encourages you to consider applying for any Fulbright category or even hosting a Scholar-in-Residence, requesting Outreach Lecturing Funds, or participating in the Fulbright Language Teacher Assistant Program. Please review the eligibility for the various options available at: http://cies.org/ before discussing them with Dr. Jaime Ortiz, UTRGV Fulbright U.S. Scholar Liaison at jaime.ortiz@utrgv.edu.
